Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo meet the current published minimums for shadPS4, a PC needs a CPU with at least 4 cores and 6 threads, a clock speed above 2.5 GHz, and x86-64-v3 support; a GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM, Vulkan 1.3, and the VK_KHR_swapchain and VK_KHR_push_descriptor extensions; at least 8GB of RAM; and a supported operating system. The project lists Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04, and macOS 26. Meeting those minimums does not guarantee that a particular game will work or run smoothly.
shadPS4 minimum PC requirements
The current official Quick Start guide, edited September 30, 2026, sets out the following minimum checklist. These are baseline requirements, not a recommended specification for a particular game.

| Component | Published minimum | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | At least 4 cores and 6 threads; above 2.5 GHz; x86-64-v3 support | Check all three properties. The guide names Intel Haswell-generation or newer, AMD Excavator-generation or newer, and Apple M1 or newer using Rosetta 2 as examples. |
| GPU | At least 2GB VRAM; Vulkan 1.3; support for VK_KHR_swapchain and VK_KHR_push_descriptor |
VRAM or the GPU’s brand and model alone do not establish that the required Vulkan version and extensions are supported. |
| RAM | 8GB or more | The current guide does not state a separate recommended amount. |
| Operating system | Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04, or macOS 26 | The project repository specifies macOS 26.0 or newer and says Intel Macs are not supported. |
| Graphics drivers | Current drivers | Update drivers for all graphics hardware in the computer, including an integrated GPU. |
Every category matters. A computer with enough RAM but an unsupported CPU baseline, or a GPU that lacks one of the named Vulkan extensions, does not meet the full checklist. The requirements work as a combined floor: passing one or several checks is not evidence that the machine meets the rest.

- Identify the CPU. Find its exact model in your system information, then check the manufacturer’s specifications for core and thread counts, clock speed, and architecture generation. Confirm that it supports x86-64-v3. The official examples are Intel Haswell generation or newer, AMD Excavator generation or newer, and Apple M1 or newer running through Rosetta 2. Do not stop at a core-count check: the guide separately names thread count, clock speed, and the instruction-set baseline.
- Check the graphics device and driver. Identify which GPU shadPS4 will use, including any integrated graphics device. Confirm that it has at least 2GB of VRAM and that the installed GPU and driver support Vulkan 1.3,
VK_KHR_swapchain, andVK_KHR_push_descriptor. Do not infer extension support from the GPU’s name alone; consult the vendor’s current specifications or Vulkan capability information for the device and driver. The test is not simply “does it have Vulkan?”—the version and both listed extensions matter. - Check installed memory. The stated floor is 8GB of RAM. The Quick Start does not publish a higher recommended amount, so it does not establish a separate target for demanding games. Treat 8GB as the published minimum, not a promise that every title will work well on a system with that amount.
- Confirm the operating system. Match your OS to one of the versions the Quick Start names: Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04, or macOS 26. On Mac, the repository clarifies that macOS 26.0 or newer is required and Intel Macs are unsupported. The CPU example for Apple systems is M1 or newer using Rosetta 2.
- Update graphics drivers. Install current drivers for every graphics adapter in the system, not just the one you expect to use. The Quick Start warns that an outdated driver for another installed card, including integrated graphics, can interfere. This is a useful check when a computer has both integrated and discrete graphics: keeping only the presumed primary adapter current may not be enough.
- Check the intended game separately. Look up the specific title in the project’s compatibility list. A PC that meets the hardware minimums may still encounter game-specific problems.
How to interpret the CPU and GPU requirements
The CPU line combines a minimum core-and-thread configuration with a clock threshold and a specific x86-64 baseline. These are separate checks, not interchangeable ways of describing a processor. A CPU that exceeds the clock figure but lacks the required baseline has not satisfied the published CPU specification; likewise, a processor with enough cores should still be checked for its thread count and architecture. The named Intel, AMD, and Apple generations are reference points from the official guide, not a substitute for checking the exact processor and the stated properties.
The graphics requirement is similarly more specific than a memory number. At least 2GB of VRAM is necessary according to the published minimum, but VRAM alone cannot confirm that a GPU qualifies. The GPU and its current driver must also provide Vulkan 1.3 and both named extensions. No particular GPU model or manufacturer is endorsed by the material reviewed, and there is no official model-by-model performance comparison to use as a shortcut. If considering a replacement, search for a graphics card whose vendor documentation verifies the version and extensions, rather than choosing only by VRAM.
The guide gives no separate recommended CPU, GPU, or RAM tier, no benchmark results, and no hardware price target. That means there is no research-backed basis here for naming a budget, ranking cards, or promising that a more expensive PC will make a given game playable. First establish whether the current hardware clears the published checks, then assess the game itself using the compatibility information.

Why meeting the minimums does not guarantee a playable game
shadPS4 is an early PlayStation 4 emulator. Its Quick Start warns that many games do not work and that games which do work may have emulation issues. The repository likewise cautions users not to expect a flawless experience. These warnings are about compatibility and emulation, not just whether a PC passes the hardware checklist.
Use the compatibility list to assess a specific game, and treat its status as a snapshot rather than a permanent guarantee: compatibility can change as the emulator develops. The official materials reviewed do not provide per-game PC benchmarks, a project-endorsed recommended PC tier, or a promise of a particular frame rate or resolution. The minimum requirements therefore cannot tell you how a particular title will perform. A compatibility listing and a system-requirements check answer different questions: the former concerns whether the game works with the emulator, while the latter describes the minimum PC capabilities the project publishes.
Operating system and setup details
The Quick Start gives Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04, and macOS 26 as its OS examples. The repository’s extra Mac detail matters if you are checking an Apple computer: the stated floor is macOS 26.0, and Intel Macs are not supported. Apple M1 or newer is the CPU example, with Rosetta 2 specified.

For installation, the Quick Start directs users to the QtLauncher; core releases are also available as a command-line tool. On Windows, the guide lists Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 as a QtLauncher prerequisite. This is an installation prerequisite, not an additional hardware requirement. Keep the distinction clear: installing that component does not replace the CPU, GPU, RAM, operating-system, or driver checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA controller is optional rather than part of the PC specification. The project repository says Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box, but neither is required to satisfy the minimum hardware list.
Game files you need
The setup guide says games, updates, and downloadable content must be dumped from your own copy. The emulator’s system requirements do not replace that content requirement. Check this before spending time troubleshooting a game: a qualifying PC and an emulator installation do not supply the game files, updates, or DLC.

What the requirements do not tell you
- They are not a performance ranking. The official figures are minimums; the project does not publish an alternative recommended CPU, GPU, or RAM tier in the cited materials.
- They do not establish GPU suitability by memory alone. A card needs the stated Vulkan version and both extensions as well as at least 2GB VRAM.
- They do not guarantee game compatibility. Check the compatibility list for the title you want to play, because the emulator’s support is game-specific.
- They do not promise a frame rate or resolution. No such result can be inferred from meeting the minimum checklist.
- They do not provide a price or upgrade recommendation. The published information does not compare PC builds or name a cost-effective GPU model.
- They do not make every accessory mandatory. A compatible controller is an optional convenience, not one of the listed system requirements.

Can I use game files downloaded from elsewhere?
The setup guide says games, updates, and DLC must be dumped from your own copy. This is separate from whether your computer meets the hardware minimums.
The Bottom Line
For the published shadPS4 baseline, verify every part of the checklist: a CPU with at least 4 cores and 6 threads, above 2.5 GHz, and x86-64-v3; a GPU with 2GB or more VRAM plus Vulkan 1.3 and both required extensions; at least 8GB RAM; a listed OS; and current graphics drivers. Then check the compatibility list for the exact game. These minimums establish neither game compatibility nor expected performance.
