In a December 31, 2024 exchange about the studio’s next project, he said that elements should add to the game experience, then clarified that his objection to contemporary political statements applied to material outside a game’s theme.
What prompted Pilestedt’s comments?
On December 31, 2024, Pilestedt asked fans what they wanted from Arrowhead’s next game, saying he was working on its high concept. One commenter replied, “Never add dei to your games.” The exchange was about a future project, not an announcement of its design or a new studio policy. Kotaku reported the exchange; the original social-media posts could not be independently accessed for this account, so the quoted wording is attributed as reproduced by the cited outlets.
What did he say about DEI?
Pilestedt replied, “If it doesnt add to the game experience, it detracts. And games should be a pure pursuit of amazing moments.” The transcription spelling “doesnt” without an apostrophe appears in the reports. His stated criterion was whether an element contributes to the experience; he did not explicitly say that all DEI belongs outside games or that Arrowhead would exclude it from future projects. Insider Gaming and Kotaku reproduced the remark.
Asked how DEI would benefit Helldivers 2, he connected the question to the game’s fictional society: “I don’t like labels. But mankind is united in its extreme xenophobia on Super Earth. #Inclusion so, maybe that’s DEI? I really don’t care. Make good games, don’t make a contemporary political statement.” This response frames the game’s shared xenophobia as part of its satire and treats inclusion as potentially fitting that fictional premise, rather than offering a general definition of DEI.

How did he clarify the political-statement remark?
In a follow-up reported by PC Gamer on January 3, 2025, Pilestedt said he meant statements outside a game’s theme. He wrote: “Well, that’s the theme of the game. I meant outside of the theme. Sorry for being unclear. Also, it’s more cold war/Bush-era politics that inspire HD2.” PC Gamer’s account thus supplies an important qualification: Pilestedt distinguished contemporary messaging outside a game’s theme from political ideas that inform the game itself.
Why did the comments draw debate?
The exchange leaves a real interpretive tension. Helldivers 2 uses political satire, including a fictional society built around extreme xenophobia, while Pilestedt urged developers not to make a contemporary political statement. His clarification suggests he sees a distinction between ideas integrated into a game’s theme and statements that sit outside it. Whether that distinction is persuasive—or where players would draw the line—is a matter of interpretation, not a settled studio rule.

Insider Gaming reported mixed feedback, while Kotaku and PC Gamer highlighted the friction between the remarks and the game’s satire. Those are outlet summaries and interpretations, not evidence of a measured consensus among players. Kotaku also described Helldivers 2 as a surprise success and reported sales of over 10 million copies in its January 2, 2025 article; that is a dated figure attributed to Kotaku, not an independently verified current total.
