The key step is activating the movable pillar on the north wall of Fathis Aren’s room in Castle Bravil; it opens the hidden route to the grotto. Bring back the key-shaped arrowhead to Gray Fox in Chorrol.
Unlock the quest and find Gray Fox
First complete the Thieves Guild quest “Turn a Blind Eye” and fence 700 gold worth of stolen goods. Amusei will then appear in the Imperial City and direct you to Gray Fox, who is waiting at Malintus Ancrus’s house in Chorrol. Game8’s Remastered walkthrough and the UESP original-game reference support the fencing requirement.
The wait before Amusei appears is not consistent across walkthroughs: Game8 says a couple of hours, while NightlyGamingBinge’s May 15, 2026 guide says a couple of days. If he does not show up immediately after the prerequisite, let more in-game time pass and check again.
Get into Fathis Aren’s room
- Speak with Gray Fox at Malintus Ancrus’s house in Chorrol to receive the assignment.
- Go to Bravil and ask a beggar about Fathis Aren. Game8 identifies Wretched Aia; persuasion or a payment may be needed to get the information.
- Enter Castle Bravil and make your way to the Lord’s Manor North Wing, then reach Fathis Aren’s room.
- Activate the movable pillar on the north wall. The right pillar reveals the concealed passage leading to the wizard’s grotto.
Cross the grotto and reach the tower
Follow the quest objective marker through the grotto toward Fathis Aren’s tower. Dungeon route descriptions vary between guides, so use the marker rather than relying on a single turn-by-turn route. Game8’s Remastered guide recommends distracting Dremora near doors when they block progress and preparing for underwater sections with an in-game Water Breathing or Buoyancy effect.

- Before swimming sections, make sure you have a way to breathe underwater or move through the water more effectively; Water Breathing and Buoyancy are the spells Game8 suggests.
Take the arrowhead and return to Gray Fox
Once you reach Fathis Aren’s room in the tower, open the chest and take both the key-shaped arrowhead and the tower key. Use the tower key to escape, then return to Gray Fox in Chorrol and give him the arrowhead to finish the quest.
Game8 reports a 500-gold reward and a Thieves Guild rank promotion. The UESP reference also records the 500-gold reward and promotion for the original game; its rank label should not be assumed to describe the Remastered version.

The Arrow of Extrication in this quest is a key-shaped quest item, not evidence of a separate real-world accessory or tool requirement. The available sources do not establish that shooting it is part of completing this quest. The route described here is to recover the arrowhead from the tower chest and return it to Gray Fox.
