Astro Bot won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024, while Black Myth: Wukong took home Best Action Game and Players’ Voice. Reports attributed a Weibo post to Black Myth: Wukong director and Game Science CEO Feng Ji, who expressed disappointment and questioned what the Game of the Year criteria were. The English excerpts are machine translations, so their tone and nuance are not definitive.
What Feng Ji reportedly said
In a translation of his Weibo post reported by PC Gamer, Feng Ji wrote: “The games nominated this year were all exceptional, but honestly, I still can’t figure out what the criteria were for Game of the Year. I feel like I came all the way here for nothing!”

PC Gamer also reported a translated passage in which Feng described the result as “no fluke” and said it reflected Chinese culture, talent, the business environment, the game industry, and players worldwide coming together. That wording, too, is a translation of the reported post rather than a verified English original.
Why the post’s tone is uncertain
The English wording should be treated as a reported machine translation, not a definitive record of Feng’s exact phrasing or intent. PC Gamer cautioned that humor and sarcasm can be lost in translation. Video Games Chronicle also noted that the post was machine-translated and that its tone could be sarcastic or joking.

It is therefore fair to describe the post as expressing disappointment and asking about the award criteria. The available reporting does not establish that Feng was bitter, disrespectful, joking, or sarcastic. Reports about an unnamed employee crying should not be confused with Feng’s own remarks.

Team Asobi’s Astro Bot won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. Black Myth: Wukong was also nominated for Game of the Year, alongside Astro Bot, Balatro, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Metaphor: ReFantazio. Wukong won Best Action Game and Players’ Voice, two distinct categories; Players’ Voice was not the Game of the Year award. Hitmarker reported the results and attributed the Weibo response to Feng Ji.
