It is a single-player, boss-forward action RPG whose opening is relatively linear before exploration branches out, while its character-building options are more focused than those of some broader RPGs.
What kind of action RPG is Black Myth: Wukong?
The official PlayStation description calls Black Myth: Wukong an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and based on Journey to the West, the classical novel. You play as the Destined One, a monkey hero inspired by Sun Wukong. Steam lists the game as single-player, and PlayStation lists one-player and offline-play support for its PS5 version.
That mythic foundation is more than a backdrop: the journey’s creatures and supernatural abilities give the game a different identity from action RPGs built around familiar medieval fantasy or contemporary settings. PC Gamer says prior reading of Journey to the West is not required, though familiarity with the story can help make sense of the world.
Is Black Myth: Wukong a Soulslike?
It has recognizable Souls-like influence, but the label alone does not capture its particular mix of combat and pacing. Steam includes “Souls-like” among its popular user-defined tags; that is a community tag, not an official genre designation. PC Gamer’s Tyler Colp described the game as clearly inspired by Dark Souls, but distinct enough that calling it a Soulslike does not do it justice.

The more useful comparison is how it feels to play: reviews describe dodge-centered movement and demanding boss encounters, while the staff’s varied attacks and supernatural abilities give combat its own emphasis. Those traits make it more precise to call it a Souls-influenced action RPG than to treat it as a straightforward example of the subgenre.
How does its combat work differently?
The staff is the center of the combat
Instead of presenting a wide roster of ordinary weapons as the main draw, Black Myth: Wukong builds around staff techniques. PlayStation’s official description highlights mastery of multiple staff techniques. In a Washington Post first-impressions column based on four hours of play, Gene Park described three staff stances that add verticality and bounce to attacks. The stances give the central weapon different ways to shape an exchange rather than making combat only a matter of repeating one attack-and-dodge pattern.

Spells and transformations add another layer
The official description also presents spells, transformations and magic vessels as abilities that can complement or counter one another. Park reported that the Destined One can transform into different defeated enemies. These powers broaden the moment-to-moment choices beyond staff strikes, though the available material does not establish a universal rotation or single best way to combine them.
That combination—staff strings, stance choices, dodging and supernatural abilities—is the clearest mechanical distinction from action RPGs whose combat identity is primarily defined by weapon selection and defensive systems. It is a comparison of emphasis, not a claim that every other game in the genre follows one formula.

Why do bosses matter so much?
Boss fights are a major part of the journey, and their spectacle is central to how reviews describe the game. PC Gamer notes an abundance of bosses and also reports uneven difficulty between encounters. Park praised fluid combat and interesting mechanics in his four-hour preview, but said bosses could feel uneven and hits could feel light. Those are attributed critical reactions, not a guarantee that every player will have the same response.
The distinction from a more exploration-led action RPG is therefore one of emphasis: expect major encounters to occupy a prominent role, rather than assuming the experience is evenly divided among bosses, open-world wandering and other activities. The reviews do not present every fight as equally cohesive, difficult or satisfying.

Neither label describes the whole journey equally well. PC Gamer’s review says the opening is extremely linear, with levels gradually opening up after the first hours. Later areas include side paths that can lead to treasure and side quests. That is one reviewer’s account of how the game progresses, not a formal map classification.
In practical terms, the early experience is more directed than a broad open-world RPG. As the journey continues, branching routes offer more room to look around, but the reported structure is not the same as an expansive, interconnected open world.

How broad is its RPG customization?
PlayStation describes combinations of spells, abilities, weapons and equipment. Park found the customization surprising, while describing it as narrower than the possibilities in a broad role-playing game; he also noted armor crafting and linear skill progression. Taken together, those details suggest a focused set of ways to develop and equip the Destined One rather than a promise of unrestricted builds.
This is an important difference for players choosing between action RPGs: the game offers meaningful equipment and ability choices, but the cited descriptions do not support treating it as a sprawling build-crafting RPG.
What to expect before playing
- Setting: Chinese mythology and Journey to the West shape the characters and world.
- Combat: Staff stances, dodging, spells and transformations define its action, with bosses taking a prominent role.
- Exploration: The opening is reported as linear, with more branching later.
- Progression: Customization exists, but the cited coverage describes it as more focused than in broad RPGs.
- Platforms and dates: PlayStation’s US PS5 page lists an August 20, 2024 release date; Steam lists August 19, 2024 for its PC storefront release. The dates differ by platform storefront and timezone.
For official feature and platform details, see the PlayStation product page and the Steam store page. For the critical perspectives discussed above, see PC Gamer’s review and Gene Park’s Washington Post first impressions.
