Bob Iger described it as a way to bring Disney stories into a space where younger audiences already spend time, participate more directly in games, and deepen Disney’s partnership with Epic. He offered a vision—not a launch date or a guarantee that every proposed feature would be built.
What Disney and Epic announced
On February 7, 2024, Disney and Epic Games announced a multiyear collaboration to create an open, persistent, social games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. They said it would be powered by Unreal Engine and bring stories and experiences from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and other properties into the experience. The announcement described possibilities including playing, watching, shopping, engaging with characters and stories, creating experiences, and sharing content with other users. Epic’s announcement did not give a launch date.

Disney said it would invest $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic. At announcement, the transaction was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. The announcement does not establish whether it later closed, or whether the planned universe launched.

Why Iger said Disney wanted an Epic stake
In prepared remarks for Disney’s February 7, 2024 Q1 FY24 earnings call, Iger called the collaboration Disney’s biggest entry into video games. He said integrating Disney storytelling into Fortnite could let consumers play, watch, create, and shop for digital and physical goods. He also linked the opportunity to reaching younger audiences where they already spend time. Disney’s prepared remarks set out that rationale, but do not establish what business results the project would deliver.
Answering Guggenheim analyst Michael Morris, Iger said licensing had been Disney’s most successful approach to video games. He explained that Disney already knew Epic through Fortnite collaborations, then framed the equity stake as a way to participate more directly in a broader partnership. He said the investment would give Disney “skin in the game,” strengthen the relationship, and help build a world without creating too much risk for Disney. That is Iger’s stated rationale, not independent evidence of the investment’s expected returns or risk.

What Iger imagined the Disney universe might be
Iger described an idea for a “gigantic Disney World a la Fortnite” that could live next to Fortnite and be interconnected with it. In his account, people might play games Disney made, create games themselves, watch, interact, and potentially shop. The company announcement’s broader language also included sharing experiences and engaging with characters and stories.
These were descriptions of a proposed experience, not confirmation that each activity would be available at launch—or that a launch had happened. Iger also raised short-form video or content distribution as possibilities in his earnings-call answer; neither was confirmed as a feature in the announcement. The earnings-call transcript records both the product vision and the analyst’s question about timing, but Iger did not give a date for when it might come to market.

In a later recap of Iger’s comments at the Morgan Stanley conference, Disney quoted him calling the planned experience “a deep, rich, fully immersive, engaging experience for consumers” and describing it as a way to extend Disney intellectual property into another medium. Disney’s recap elaborated on the ambition; it did not announce a launch or show that the ambition had been realized.

Iger contrasted Disney’s previous reliance on licensing with the new collaboration. Under licensing, another company uses Disney properties in games; in the announced Epic relationship, Disney paired an equity investment with a plan to create an interconnected experience of its own with Epic. The sources describe that distinction as Iger’s explanation of the strategic shift, not as a claim that Disney would stop licensing games elsewhere.
