Bungie described the Marathon alpha as a test that helped it focus the game—not as a promise that every planned change was already in the build. Afterward, the studio prioritized tougher AI, more rewarding runs, more strategic combat, richer visual and environmental detail, better solo and duo play, and proximity chat. A December 2025 recap listed features Bungie said were new since alpha; a September 2026 roadmap outlines further planned updates that should not be mistaken for shipped improvements.
What was in the Marathon alpha—and what can be verified?
Bungie announced a closed alpha window of April 23–May 4, 2025, describing three-player crews and solo play. The alpha was an early test build, not a final specification of the game. Bungie’s later updates document its own feedback priorities and feature comparisons; they do not independently authenticate a particular leak or establish that any specific leaked detail was accurate. Without a named leak and its publication date, “alpha leak” is best treated as a reader’s shorthand, not verified evidence.
The game’s originally announced September 23, 2025 launch date was later delayed. Bungie subsequently announced March 5, 2026 as the release date. Bungie’s April 2025 showcase, June 2025 development update, and January 2026 release announcement establish that chronology.
What improvements did Bungie prioritize after alpha feedback?
In its June 17, 2025 development update, Bungie said alpha feedback helped it calibrate the game around survival under pressure, mystery and lore, raid-like endgame challenges, and FPS combat. The team wrote: “The Alpha test created an opportunity for us to calibrate and focus the game on what will make it uniquely compelling—survival under pressure, mystery and lore around every corner, raid-like endgame challenges, and Bungie’s genre-defining FPS combat.”

- CLASSIC GRAPHICS AND SOUNDS: Immerse yourself in nostalgia with classic graphics, music, and sounds that look just like the original Tetris arcade game!
- AUTHENTIC GAMEPLAY: Use the joystick and buttons to move and rotate the Tetriminos as they fall to complete lines and score points!
- FULL COLOR SCREEN: With a brighter, full color screen that makes it easy to see the blocks, you’ll be racking up points like a pro as you stack your Tetriminos!
- MARATHON MODE: Race to line up your Tetriminos in rows before they stack too high. Complete 10 lines to move to the next level. But watch out - the Tetriminos drop faster the longer you play!
- SHARE AND COLLECT: Arcade Classics are a must-have retro toy for collectors or for anyone looking to share this classic toy with the next generation!
Those were development goals, not a measured claim that each area had already improved. Bungie named these work areas:
- Survival and combat: tougher, more engaging AI encounters and combat with more tension and strategic choices.
- Runs and rewards: more rewarding runs through new loot and dynamic events.
- World and tone: increased visual fidelity, more discoverable and interactive environmental storytelling, and a darker tone.
- Playing with fewer teammates: a better solo and duo experience.
- Social encounters: proximity chat.
The update also announced the delay from the previously planned September 23, 2025 release. Read Bungie’s June 17, 2025 update for its full explanation.

Which features did Bungie later say were new since alpha?
In a December 15, 2025 ViDoc recap, Bungie described the following as additions or changes since alpha. This is Bungie’s own retrospective comparison, rather than an independently tested feature-by-feature audit.
- Proximity chat and solo queue: social tools for communicating nearby and entering a match alone.
- Rook: a Runner shell that lets players scavenge matches already in progress.
- Greater fidelity and immersion: visual improvements and dead Runner bodies that decay over time.
- More environmental storytelling: deeper ways for the setting to convey information through its spaces.
- Four zones: Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and Outpost as surface zones, plus Cryo Archive as an endgame challenge.
- More customization: weapon and mod customization, along with Runner shell archetypes.
- Faction and narrative progression: faction jobs and upgrade trees, plus a Codex for achievements and narrative discoveries.
Bungie’s December 2025 ViDoc recap presents these as features since alpha; it does not make every item a direct response to one specific piece of player feedback.
What is still planned in the latest roadmap?
Bungie’s September 24, 2026 roadmap says newer players found Marathon difficult to understand and some established players wanted clearer plans and more reasons to return. It describes work scheduled for October, December, and March. These are roadmap plans, not confirmation that all listed updates had shipped by October 8, 2026.
| Roadmap point | Bungie’s stated plan | Status in the September 24, 2026 roadmap |
|---|---|---|
| October: Nightfall Refresh | Focus on progression, rewards, and the live experience. | Planned for October 2026. |
| December: Symbiosis | First permanent PvE mode; experimental Team Deathmatch; expanded Perimeter; a new shell; improved onboarding; and a social space with a firing range. | Planned for December 2026. |
| March: larger evolution | Connect permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences; deepen shell progression; focus quests and narrative; add new alien combatants and an entirely new zone. | Planned for March; the roadmap describes a future evolution. |
For players evaluating the game now, the distinction matters: the alpha-era priorities and Bungie’s December feature recap describe past development; the roadmap describes upcoming work. Check Bungie’s September 24, 2026 roadmap and subsequent patch notes for the latest delivery status.

Where can you play Marathon?
Bungie announced Marathon for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
