Squad Busters’ May 2025 overhaul added player-controlled Heroes and supporting Squaddies, changing how players make decisions before and during a battle. A Hero’s Power move is actively controlled, and losing that Hero wipes out the entire Squad. Supercell said the redesign aimed to add strategic depth while keeping the game accessible; it later announced that active development would end and that servers were planned to close in 2026.
What changed in the May 2025 overhaul?
Supercell announced the Heroes and Squaddies update on May 13, 2025. It recast familiar characters as Heroes and made them the central choice in a battle. The update included Barbarian King, Archer Queen, Mortis, and Royale King. Supercell described Heroes as super-charged versions of characters from the earlier game.
The change was not simply a new roster: it shifted some battle decisions from automatic squad growth to direct player control. The comparison below follows the mechanics described in Supercell’s announcement; it is not an independent gameplay test.
| Gameplay axis | Earlier squad structure | Heroes and Squaddies update |
|---|---|---|
| Ability control | Supercell’s announcement describes the update’s new distinction, but does not give a separate account of earlier ability control. | The player chooses a Hero and actively controls its Power move. Supporting Squaddies’ abilities activate automatically as they are collected and fused. |
| Squad assembly | Characters were assembled into a Squad; the announcement does not detail the earlier assembly system for a direct comparison. | The chosen Hero is supported by Squaddies collected and fused during play. |
| Elimination risk | The announcement does not specify an earlier elimination rule for comparison. | If the Hero is busted, the whole Squad is wiped out. |
| Strategic choice | Supercell said players had asked for more decision-making before and during battles. | The chosen Hero and its actively controlled Power move add direct decisions, while Squaddies contribute automatic abilities. |
These mechanics and the comparison are based on Supercell’s announcement, not independent testing. Read Supercell’s May 13, 2025 announcement.

How do Heroes and Squaddies work?
Heroes: a high-stakes choice
Players select a Hero, such as Barbarian King, Archer Queen, Mortis, or Royale King. Each Hero has a Power move the player controls rather than an ability that simply activates as the squad grows. The risk is unusually concentrated: when the Hero is busted, the entire Squad is wiped out.
Squaddies: automatic support
Squaddies provide supporting abilities. Those abilities activate automatically as players collect and fuse Squaddies, in contrast to the Hero’s player-controlled Power move. The system therefore combines an active focal character with supporting units whose contributions arise through squad collection and fusion.

Why did Supercell make the change?
Johnathan Rowlands, identified by Supercell as head of the Squad Busters game team, said players wanted more strategic decision-making before and during battles. He described the aim as adding a deeper strategic layer without losing accessibility. Supercell also said the team spent months experimenting while running the live game and was responding to player feedback.
“It’s been almost 12 months since Squad Busters launched globally and the team has learned a tonne thanks to the passionate feedback from our players. For example, many players have asked for more strategic decision-making before and during battles. We’re also starting to give players a deeper sense of the game’s lore and how that relates to the new Heroes and Squaddies. Getting to this point has meant many months of experimentation, all the while running the live game. So, a big shout out to the team, who have shown immense commitment to evolve Squad Busters into an experience that remains accessible but now offers a deeper strategic layer.”

Is Squad Busters still playable?
Supercell announced on October 30, 2025 that active development would end. Its announcement said a final update was planned for December 2025 and that the game would remain downloadable and playable for a while, with server closure expected sometime in 2026, but not before midyear. Supercell’s FAQ described the intended server window as between midyear and the end of 2026. These are announced plans, not confirmation that servers have closed or a guarantee of a specific shutdown date. Check Supercell’s latest notice for the current status.

Supercell said that, despite several reworks including the Heroes update, it could not see a clear path forward without another major pivot that would change the experience again. Its FAQ says the Heroes overhaul changed major systems—including movement, pathfinding, targeting, fusions, chests, spells, and the economy—making a return to version 1.0 incompatible with the changed game. Those are Supercell’s explanations for its decision, not independently established causes.
