Choosing a Heretical option in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader does more than change one line of dialogue. It adds points to your Heretical conviction path, which can alter later narrative reactions and unlock conviction-dependent gameplay effects. The weight of each choice differs, and at least one documented Heretical decision permanently sacrifices a companion. However, no available evidence supports the idea that a single Heretical choice automatically determines your ending or the fate of every companion.
The safest way to play is to treat every option as two decisions at once: a role-playing statement and a mechanical investment. Read the displayed conviction requirement or consequence, note the points awarded, and make a manual save before choices that mention a companion or an irreversible action.

How the conviction system treats Heretical choices
Heretical is one of three tracked paths
Rogue Trader tracks three conviction approaches: Dogmatic, Iconoclast, and Heretical. A dialogue option marked Heretical contributes to that separate path rather than functioning as an isolated alignment tag. Your accumulated choices can therefore affect later conversations and other systems that react to conviction.

The game presents conviction as a progression system with ranks. A decision can give points toward Heretical without immediately changing every part of your character sheet. Later choices may require a particular rank, and some item properties are tied to a conviction or rank. In practical terms, an early decision is often useful because it moves you toward access to later content, even when its immediate dialogue result looks minor.

Points are not interchangeable
Two options carrying the Heretical label may award different numbers of points. The choice appendix maintained on GameFAQs lists decisions with individual values; it does not justify treating every Heretical selection as equal. A dramatic Act decision can therefore be worth more or less than a short conversation choice elsewhere.
Do not calculate your progress by counting labels alone. If you are trying to reach a rank for a later option, record the actual award shown for each decision and keep in mind that the current game build may not match an older community table.
What can change after a Heretical decision?
Narrative reactivity
The most basic effect is narrative. The conviction system can make later scenes react to the path you have been building. This may change which dialogue options are available, how a scene frames your character’s motives, or which conviction-specific responses appear. The broad system documentation confirms that conviction affects narrative reactivity, but the available material does not provide a complete scene-by-scene list.
That distinction matters when planning a run. A Heretical response is not merely cosmetic, but neither is it a guaranteed branch into one fixed sequence of scenes. The eventual result depends on the accumulated path, the requirements of the later scene, and the particular choice involved.
Gameplay and item effects
Conviction can also have mechanical consequences. Some item properties are linked to a conviction or conviction rank, so reaching a threshold may change what equipment can do or which properties are relevant to your build. The exact item list and every rank threshold are not established by the material available here, so it would be misleading to promise a universal Heretical bonus or a complete list of rewards.

When an item or ability displays a conviction requirement in your current version, use that in-game text as the authoritative requirement for your character. Community summaries are useful for orientation, but they can lag behind patches or omit conditions.
Access to later conviction options
Accumulating Heretical points can make additional Heretical responses available when a later scene checks your rank. That does not mean that every Heretical choice unlocks the next one, or that the path is linear. The system is better understood as a pool of progress that later content can test.

The documented permanent companion loss
One choice-level appendix documents a Heretical decision that sacrifices a companion and permanently removes that character. This is the clearest established example of a consequence that goes beyond adding points. Once the sacrifice is accepted, the loss is not presented as a temporary injury or a reversible change in party composition.
That example should be treated as a warning about the category, not as a rule for every Heretical option. Most available information does not establish that ordinary Heretical dialogue choices remove companions, and there is no basis for claiming that all companions react identically to the path.
How to protect a campaign from an irreversible choice
- Save before committing. Create a manual save before selecting a Heretical option that names a companion, sacrifice, execution, or permanent departure.
- Read the complete prompt. Do not rely on the colored conviction label. The surrounding text may state the actual cost.
- Check the party afterward. Confirm whether the companion remains available and whether equipment, quests, or party slots changed.
- Keep the save until the consequence is clear. A quick reload is safer than assuming an apparent short-term change will be corrected later.
This procedure is useful even when you intend to remain fully Heretical. It lets you distinguish a deliberate sacrifice from an accidental loss caused by skimming a dialogue box.

Patch 1.3 changed the value of later choices
What Owlcat changed
In its “Update 1.3 is live!” announcement, Owlcat Games stated: “Many dialogue choices in the third and fourth Acts of the game that gave Dogmatic, Heretical or Iconoclast points now give significantly more of those points.” The statement covers all three conviction paths and specifically identifies Acts III and IV.
The practical effect is that older guides can understate how quickly a character advances during those acts. A route that previously appeared unable to reach a rank may now accumulate more points from the same type of dialogue, depending on the build you are playing.
Why existing characters did not receive the points retroactively
Owlcat also explained that existing characters would not receive the added points immediately. Awarding the increase to established saves could force a character to switch conviction against the player’s wishes. The change was therefore applied to choices going forward rather than silently recalculating every prior decision.
This creates an important version distinction. A guide written before Patch 1.3, a save created before the patch, and a new run played on a later build may show different totals even when the player selects the same responses. Use the values and requirements displayed in your game where they conflict with an old table.
What Patch 1.3 does not prove
The patch note does not publish a complete current table of every Heretical award, nor does it say that every choice in Acts III and IV has the same increase. “Significantly more” is Owlcat’s description of the adjustment, not a universal multiplier that can be applied to an old walkthrough. It also does not establish new companion outcomes or guarantee a particular ending.

Can you mix Heretical with Dogmatic or Iconoclast?
Yes, the system tracks all three paths separately, so selecting an occasional option from another path does not erase the fact that you have accumulated Heretical points. The meaningful question is not whether one mixed choice is allowed; it is which path has enough progress to satisfy a later rank check and which response you want to present in that scene.
Mixed play can be sensible when you want a specific reaction, item interaction, or role-playing moment without abandoning your main direction. It can also make a threshold harder to reach if you spend too many opportunities on competing paths. Because the available documentation does not establish every threshold or ending condition, avoid assuming that a fixed ratio such as “mostly Heretical” guarantees a particular conclusion.
A practical way to manage a mixed path
- Choose a primary conviction for role-playing and likely rank goals.
- Record unusually large point awards rather than counting dialogue labels.
- Before taking a competing-path option, inspect whether the scene displays a rank requirement or a stated consequence.
- Keep a save before major act transitions so you can test a different response without losing hours of progress.
Do Heretical choices determine the ending?
They can contribute to the conditions that shape later narrative content, but the available evidence does not establish a complete ending guide. It does not verify every threshold, companion reaction, branch, or ending slide in the current build. Consequently, the accurate answer is conditional: Heretical progress matters, but one choice alone should not be described as determining the whole run.
When a late-game decision displays a requirement, treat that visible requirement as the relevant test for that moment. Do not infer an unseen ending result from the color of an earlier option. A community list of individual awards can show that a choice gives Heretical points without proving which ending follows from a particular total.
How to evaluate a Heretical option in play
Step 1: Separate the role-playing intent from the system effect
First decide whether the response matches the character you want to play. Heretical choices can represent radically different motives, so the label alone does not tell you whether the result fits your interpretation. Once the role-playing decision is clear, inspect the mechanical information rather than treating the label as the entire consequence.

Step 2: Read the displayed requirement and warning
Look for a conviction rank requirement, an explicit point award, or language indicating a sacrifice, departure, or other permanent action. If no numerical award is shown, do not invent one from a guide written for another version.
Step 3: Estimate the opportunity cost
Every choice is also a decision not to take another path’s points. This matters most when you are close to a rank threshold. A small award may be enough to unlock a later response, while a larger Act III or IV award after Patch 1.3 may change your planning entirely.
Step 4: Save before irreversible content
Make a manual save whenever the text names a companion or describes an action that cannot logically be undone. The documented companion sacrifice is sufficient reason to adopt this habit for all high-stakes Heretical scenes.

Step 5: Verify the result
After the scene, check your conviction progress, party roster, quest state, and any item or ability that was supposed to react. This catches permanent consequences immediately and prevents you from building the rest of a campaign on a mistaken assumption.
What older guides can get wrong
- Outdated point totals: Acts III and IV awards were increased in Patch 1.3, and existing characters were not automatically granted the difference.
- Equal-weight assumptions: Heretical choices have different individual point values.
- Overstated ending claims: A list of choices does not by itself document every ending condition.
- Overgeneralized companion warnings: One documented permanent sacrifice does not prove that every Heretical option removes a companion.
- Confusing path with rank: Having selected Heretical dialogue is not the same as meeting a later rank requirement.
These limitations do not make the conviction system unknowable; they define what can be stated confidently. The in-game prompt is the best evidence for the immediate choice, while Owlcat’s patch notes establish the Act III and IV adjustment.
A concise decision framework
| Question | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Does the option fit your character? | Conviction is also a role-playing commitment. | Choose it when the motive matches the run you want. |
| How many points does it award? | Choices on the same path do not have equal weight. | Record the displayed value instead of counting labels. |
| Does it show a rank requirement? | Later responses may depend on accumulated progress. | Compare the requirement with your current in-game rank. |
| Does it mention a companion or permanent action? | At least one Heretical choice permanently sacrifices a companion. | Make a manual save and read the full warning. |
| Is the information from before Patch 1.3? | Acts III and IV awards were increased. | Prefer the current in-game value over an old walkthrough. |
Bottom line for a Heretical run
Heretical decisions build a tracked conviction path that can change narrative reactivity and conviction-linked gameplay effects. Their point values vary, and Patch 1.3 increased many Dogmatic, Heretical, and Iconoclast awards in Acts III and IV without retroactively changing existing characters. The path can therefore influence progression, but the evidence does not support a one-choice-equals-one-ending formula. The permanent companion-sacrifice example is real and should be handled as an irreversible branch, while other companion and ending outcomes must be judged from the specific prompt and current build rather than assumed from the Heretical label alone.
