When Gaming Helps Mental Health—and When to Seek Extra Support

For most people, video games are a healthy hobby. They can provide enjoyment, a break from stress, learning opportunities, or carefully designed support in some health-care settings. Concern begins when gaming repeatedly causes distress, feels difficult to control, or displaces sleep, health, relationships, school, work, or other important activities.

There is no hour limit that automatically defines a problem. Judge your pattern by its effects and by whether you can choose when to stop. If disruption or distress is significant or persistent, consider talking with a qualified health professional.

The practical answer: look at functioning, not enthusiasm

Enjoying games intensely does not, by itself, mean something is wrong. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes gaming disorder as a pattern associated with marked impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important areas of functioning, together with psychological distress. That definition puts consequences and loss of control ahead of a particular genre, platform, or number of hours.

A useful distinction is whether gaming fits into your life or steadily takes it over. You may be able to play for a long session, stop when you intend to, sleep adequately, meet responsibilities, and remain engaged with other interests. A different pattern is repeated gaming that continues despite harm, becomes more important than basic obligations, or leaves you unable to reduce it even when you want to.

Can video games help with anxiety or low mood?

Enjoyment and short-term relief

Games can offer pleasure, absorption, and a temporary break from worries. Those experiences may be valuable forms of recreation, but relief during or immediately after play is not proof that gaming treats an anxiety or mood disorder. If the underlying problem remains, or if gaming is the only way you can cope, a broader support plan may be needed.

What the evidence actually says

The American Psychological Association (APA) says appropriately designed games may have educational value and that some games may provide mental-health benefits or be used during therapy. The 2022 Mental Health Foundation Mind Gaming report says casual gaming may be linked to improvements in symptoms of anxiety and low mood. It also stresses that the relationship is complex: poorer wellbeing may increase the risk of problematic play. An association does not show that ordinary recreational gaming caused an improvement, and the report is not a current clinical guideline.

Benefits depend on design and context

A game built for a clinical or educational purpose is not equivalent to every commercial release. The relevant questions are what the game is designed to do, how it is introduced, and whether it is used alongside appropriate care. A game that helps you distract yourself for a while may be useful in one situation and unhelpful if it consistently postpones sleep, treatment, or essential tasks.

When does gaming become a concern?

WHO and APA descriptions point to a pattern rather than one isolated evening. Use the comparison below to examine what is happening in your own life; it is not a diagnostic checklist.

Area to examine More manageable pattern Reason to consider support
Control You can decide when to begin and stop, even if stopping is sometimes disappointing. You repeatedly play longer than intended, cannot cut back, or feel unable to stop despite trying.
Priority Gaming sits alongside work, school, relationships, rest, and other interests. Gaming increasingly outranks those activities and crowds out commitments or interests you once valued.
Consequences A long session has limited, temporary effects that you can correct. You continue or escalate play despite missed obligations, conflict, health changes, or other negative consequences.
Wellbeing You generally feel restored or entertained after playing. Gaming is tied to continuing distress, worsening mood, disrupted sleep, or deterioration in social functioning.
Stability The pattern is steady and fits your circumstances. The interference is repeated, worsening, or persistent rather than an occasional response to a holiday or deadline.

These contrasts reflect WHO’s core features: impaired control, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities, and continuation or escalation despite negative consequences. Experiencing one difficult week does not establish a disorder; a recurring pattern that impairs important parts of life deserves attention.

How much gaming is too much?

The reviewed WHO guidance does not set a universal number of hours. Population estimates and assessments vary, and time alone cannot show whether a person is distressed or impaired. Two people can play the same number of hours with very different effects, while a shorter session can still be harmful if it repeatedly causes missed sleep or obligations.

Instead of asking for a magic cutoff, ask whether gaming excludes daily activities and whether your physical, psychological, or social functioning has changed. Consider the following questions over several days:

  1. Am I sleeping at the time and for the duration I need, or am I regularly delaying sleep to continue playing?
  2. Are meals, movement, hygiene, study, work, or appointments being skipped or rushed because of gaming?
  3. Have relationships become strained because I cancel plans, withdraw, or argue about play?
  4. Can I stop when I planned to, including when a session is going badly or a game offers another reward?
  5. Do I keep playing even after noticing clear negative effects?
  6. Is gaming one interest among several, or has it displaced nearly everything else?

Write down intended stopping times, actual stopping times, sleep, and any missed responsibilities for a week if that feels safe and useful. The purpose is to notice patterns, not to create a new score or self-diagnose.

Health effects associated with gaming behaviour

WHO identifies several health concerns associated with gaming behaviour: sleep deprivation, insufficient physical activity, an unhealthy diet, eyesight or hearing problems, and musculoskeletal problems. These are possible risks, not inevitable results of playing and not evidence that every player is unhealthy.

  • Sleep: Late sessions, stimulating content, or losing track of time can reduce sleep opportunity. Notice whether tiredness is affecting concentration, mood, or safety the next day.
  • Movement: Long sedentary periods may leave too little time for ordinary physical activity. Break up play and protect time for movement that is realistic for your health.
  • Food and hydration: Games can make regular meals easy to postpone. A pattern of skipping meals or relying on an unhealthy diet is a health issue in its own right.
  • Eyes and hearing: Discomfort, headaches, or hearing changes warrant reducing exposure and seeking medical advice when symptoms persist. Do not assume gaming is the only possible cause.
  • Musculoskeletal comfort: Repeated pain, numbness, or stiffness should prompt changes in posture, equipment, breaks, and, when needed, clinical evaluation.

WHO/Europe’s Dr Kremlin Wickramasinghe summarized the wider concern this way: “There are obvious risks connected with video games that need to be addressed across the Region: from concealed ads for unhealthy products inside the gameplay, to games’ impact on sedentary lifestyles and mental health.” The statement describes risks that merit attention, not a prediction about every game or player.

When should I get help for gaming?

Consider contacting a qualified health professional when gaming is repeatedly associated with significant distress, loss of control, or disruption in important areas of life. Examples include persistent sleep loss, deteriorating physical or psychological health, serious conflict with family or friends, missed school or work, or an inability to reduce play despite negative consequences.

You do not need to prove that you have “gaming disorder” before asking for help. A doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, or other appropriately qualified clinician can help assess sleep, mood, anxiety, attention, substance use, stressors, medical issues, and the role gaming is playing. They can also look for conditions that may be driving a change in gaming, rather than assuming the game is the sole cause.

Bring concrete observations: when you play, what you intended to do, what actually happened, how sleep and responsibilities changed, and what attempts to cut back felt like. If someone you trust has noticed a change, their observations can add useful context. Be candid about both benefits and harms; the goal is an accurate picture, not punishment.

Can video games be used in therapy?

Yes, some games have roles in health care, but that does not make games a replacement for treatment. WHO/Europe quoted David Drummond, Assistant Professor at Necker Enfants Malades Hospital, University of Paris: “Video games can be used in health care, and they are already used in some official treatment programmes. They can either inform and teach patients how to live with their medical condition or help to distract them.”

His qualification is essential: “But from what is known today, games could work only as part of a broad approach based on more traditional interventions. In other words, games will not replace people in the health sector.” A clinician may recommend a particular digital intervention for a specific purpose, monitor how it works, and combine it with established care. Choosing a commercial game on your own is not the same as receiving a validated therapy.

  1. Set a stopping cue before you start. Use a clock, an alarm, a scheduled meal, or another unavoidable commitment. Choose a point that leaves enough time for sleep and preparation for the next day.
  2. Protect fixed obligations first. Put work, school, appointments, meals, medication, and essential care on the calendar before deciding when to play.
  3. Build in movement and sensory breaks. Stand up, change position, rest your eyes, and stop if pain, numbness, or hearing discomfort appears.
  4. Make stopping easier. Save at a natural pause, disable avoidable notifications, and keep the device out of reach when you need to sleep or concentrate.
  5. Track effects, not just duration. Note sleep quality, mood, energy, relationships, and completed responsibilities. If those measures worsen, adjust the pattern even if the number of hours seems modest.
  6. Tell a trusted person what you are trying. A friend, partner, family member, or clinician can provide accountability without treating enthusiasm as a problem.

If repeated attempts do not change the pattern, or distress is growing, move from self-management to professional support rather than escalating self-criticism.

How supporters can raise the subject

Parents, partners, teachers, and friends should focus on observable effects: missed sleep, skipped obligations, withdrawal, conflict, or changes in health. Avoid treating a favorite game, high skill, or long weekend session as proof of illness. Ask open questions such as “What happens when you try to stop?” and “How has gaming affected sleep or school?”

Agree on practical protections where appropriate, such as a bedtime routine or scheduled responsibilities, and revisit whether they work. If there is marked impairment, escalating conflict, or persistent distress, encourage a conversation with a qualified professional. Immediate danger or thoughts of self-harm require local emergency or crisis support rather than a gaming plan.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell us

WHO’s overview reports “problem gaming” estimates ranging from 1.3% to 9.9% across populations. WHO presents this as a proxy measure for gaming-disorder prevalence, not a single global rate or an individual’s probability. Estimates vary considerably, partly because standardized assessment instruments are lacking.

The available sources also do not establish a causal effect size for ordinary recreational gaming on mental health. The Mental Health Foundation report dates from 2022, and WHO/Europe’s treatment discussion dates from 2021; both illustrate possibilities and limitations rather than guaranteeing outcomes for a particular game. APA’s 2024 feature is a synthesis and reported feature, not a universal rule for every player.

The most reliable decision remains personal and functional: is gaming a voluntary, enjoyable part of life, or is a persistent pattern of impaired control and distress disrupting sleep, health, relationships, school, work, or other priorities? When the latter is true, professional support is appropriate.
