What Difficulty Level Should You Pick in Ninja Gaiden 4?

New to fast action games? Start with Hero. Comfortable with the basics? Try Normal. Choose Hard for a tougher first run, and save Master Ninja for after Story Mode.

For a first playthrough, choose Hero if you’re new to fast action games or want adjustable help while learning; choose Normal if you know the action-game basics and want the standard challenge; choose Hard if you’re experienced and want more pressure from the start. These are practical starting points, not a universal ranking—and you can change difficulty as you progress. Xbox Wire’s difficulty overview describes the available choices and flexibility.

Which difficulty should you choose for your first run?

Choose Best fit What to expect
Hero Players new to fast action combat, or anyone who wants help while learning enemy cues and combat flow. Assistance such as automatic guarding and evasion can help you get oriented. You can toggle assists as your confidence grows; Hero is a learning route, not a promise that every fight will be easy. Xbox Wire and the official feature on difficulty describe these options.
Normal Players comfortable with action-game fundamentals who want to learn the game without Hero’s assistance. A sensible default if you already understand blocking, dodging, and combo timing. If it feels too punishing or too forgiving, adjust the setting while you play. Xbox Wire says difficulty can be changed during progression.
Hard Experienced action players who specifically want a demanding first run. Choose it for added pressure from the beginning, not because you must stay on it for the entire story. You can change difficulty as you progress. Xbox Wire documents that flexibility.
Master Ninja Players who have cleared Story Mode and want the highest challenge. It unlocks after clearing the story. Xbox Wire describes harder enemy placements, larger groups, and more aggressive enemy AI, so it is a follow-up challenge rather than a first-run starting point. Read the official overview.

How to decide based on your experience

If you’re new to fast action combat

Start on Hero and focus on recognizing enemy tells, finding openings, and learning how combat flows. As those skills become familiar, toggle off an assist at a time rather than removing every aid at once. Masakazu Hirayama of Team NINJA said the assists include Auto Guard and Auto Dodge and “can actually be toggled on and off at any time in the game” in the official Xbox podcast.

If you already know the fundamentals

Pick Normal if you are used to reading attacks, blocking or dodging, and timing combos, but do not know this game’s encounters yet. It lets you learn the game without Hero’s automatic assistance. If the challenge stops matching what you want, changing difficulty is a reasonable adjustment rather than a failed choice.

If you want to be tested from the outset

Choose Hard if you have substantial experience with action games and deliberately want a tougher first run. If repeated difficult fights stop being enjoyable, you can lower the setting while progressing; conversely, you can raise it if Normal feels too easy.

What Hero’s assists do—and don’t mean

Hero is designed to make the combat more approachable through assistance features, including automatic guard and evasion. The assists are adjustable, so you can use them as training wheels and reduce them individually when you are ready. That makes Hero a useful option for learning, not an indication that you will effortlessly sweep through the game. Automaton West’s October 2025 discussion similarly frames the mode around learning.

The named difficulty tier is only one part of the experience. Xbox Wire also describes options for presentation, platforming assistance, healing, visual information, and controls. If a particular gameplay or presentation barrier is making the game difficult, look at those options as well; the official feature does not say that they are exclusive to Hero. See Xbox Wire’s feature.

Use Training Mode before stepping up

Training Mode is available from the title screen and within chapters. Xbox Wire says it lets you spar against selected enemies, test combat and weapon skills, and practice combos. Use it to work on a technique or matchup before increasing the challenge, rather than raising difficulty simply to find out whether you are ready. Training Mode details.

Is there one best difficulty for everyone?

No single setting has been established as the best choice for every player. The practical recommendation depends on your experience, whether you want automatic assistance, and how much pressure you want on a first run. The documented options support adapting the setting as you learn; they do not establish a universal player preference or a success rate for any tier.
