A Nintendo DS game works with Download Play only if that specific game supports it. Check the game’s packaging and manual for “Single-Card Play” or Download Play instructions; compatibility and the modes available to players without a game card vary by title. Nintendo’s official Mario Party DS manual, for example, documents multiplayer using DS Download Play—but it is one confirmed example, not a complete list.
How to tell whether a DS game supports Download Play
Look for a single-card multiplayer or Download Play indication on the game packaging, then confirm the feature and its rules in that title’s manual. Nintendo notes that multiplayer details vary by game and directs players to the software manual for instructions (Mario Party DS manual; Nintendo: How to Play a Single-Card Multiplayer Download Game).
Download Play lets compatible systems receive game information wirelessly from a host system running the game card. One copy can therefore be enough for a supported mode, but it does not mean that every game supports Download Play or that card-free players can access every multiplayer mode.
Confirmed example: Mario Party DS
Nintendo’s official manual for Mario Party DS documents multiplayer through DS Download Play. Consult the manual for the game’s specific setup and rules; the confirmation does not establish that every mode is available to players who downloaded the game, or that other titles support the feature.

How to start a Download Play session
- On the host: Insert and start the compatible game, then choose its multiplayer or download option. The exact menu wording and available modes depend on the title.
- On each client system: Open Download Play and select the Nintendo DS software option to search for the host’s game.
- Enable wireless communication and follow any additional prompts in the game. Use the manual for title-specific steps.
Downloaded game information may be temporary. Nintendo’s DSi instructions note that it can stop working if the host system is turned off (Nintendo DSi: Download Play).
Which Nintendo systems can join DS Download Play?
Nintendo lists Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, 3DS, and 3DS XL as systems that can use DS Download Play. This applies to compatible DS software: a 3DS-family system can join DS Download Play for a DS game, but DS and DSi systems cannot receive 3DS software through Download Play. Nintendo also describes restrictions for DSi software, so check the relevant instructions for the game and system (Nintendo DSi: Compatible Games; Nintendo: How to Play a Single-Card Multiplayer Download Game).

Region and accessory exceptions
Game regions
Nintendo says older DS and DS Lite software is generally region-free, while DSi-exclusive game cards are region-locked. These are general statements about game-card compatibility, not a guarantee that every title or every Download Play pairing will work across regions. Check the game’s own compatibility information (Nintendo DSi: Compatible Games).
Games that use a Game Boy Advance slot accessory
Some DS games require a peripheral inserted into the Game Boy Advance slot. Nintendo says those titles are not compatible with DSi and 3DS systems, which do not provide that slot (Nintendo DSi: Compatible Games).

What to check before choosing a game
- Does the packaging or manual explicitly identify Download Play or single-card multiplayer?
- Which multiplayer modes can downloaded players use, and how many players are supported?
- Does the mode require a game card in every system, or can other players join by downloading?
- Are all participating systems compatible with the DS software and with one another?
- Does the game have a region restriction or require a Game Boy Advance slot accessory?
Nintendo’s support guidance points players to each game’s manual for these details; the sources cited here do not provide a complete title-by-title compatibility list or a total number of DS games that support Download Play.
