Microsoft’s 2020 announcement introduced Direct3D feature level 12_2 as a standard bundle of GPU capabilities—not a performance rating or a promise that every GPU from a named vendor supports it. Microsoft said GeForce RTX GPUs already supported the feature level, while its statements about AMD, Intel and Qualcomm described upcoming hardware, a roadmap and a collaboration respectively.
What Direct3D feature level 12_2 is
Feature level 12_2 is a Direct3D capability grouping: an application can use it to determine which graphics functionality a device guarantees and choose an appropriate rendering path. The name uses an underscore because it is a Direct3D feature-level label; it is not “DirectX 12.2.” Microsoft explains that a feature level guarantees functionality, not speed: performance depends on how the hardware implements those capabilities. Microsoft’s feature-level documentation makes that distinction explicit.
Microsoft introduced 12_2 for use with Direct3D 12. Some of its capabilities are not exposed through the Direct3D 11 programming model, so support for DirectX 12 generally does not by itself establish support for feature level 12_2. Microsoft’s announcement also noted that a driver update might be needed.
What capabilities the 12_2 specification requires
The specification groups several graphics features and minimum capability tiers into one level. The headline features align with capabilities Microsoft highlighted for DirectX 12 Ultimate: ray tracing, variable-rate shading, mesh shaders and sampler feedback. The full 12_2 requirements are broader:

The DirectX-Specs feature level 12_2 specification also lists depth-bounds testing, wave operations, logic operations and other required flags. A device must meet the defined bundle; having one or several individual features is not the same as meeting the feature level.
What Microsoft said about each GPU vendor
In its 2020 announcement, Microsoft described the four vendors differently. Those statements should be read as a snapshot of what Microsoft said at the time, not as a current model-by-model support list.

| Vendor | Microsoft’s 2020 statement | What the wording establishes |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA | “Feature level 12_2 is supported on NVIDIA GeForce RTX and NVIDIA Quadro RTX GPUs.” | Microsoft reported support for those named RTX families in the announcement; it did not provide a complete present-day list of models and driver versions. |
| AMD | “AMD’s upcoming RDNA 2 architecture based GPUs will include full feature level 12_2 support.” | This was a statement about upcoming RDNA 2-based GPUs, not a claim that all AMD GPUs support 12_2. |
| Intel | “Intel’s roadmap includes discrete GPUs that will empower developers to take full advantage of Feature Level 12_2.” | This described Intel’s roadmap, not confirmation that every Intel GPU—or a particular current model—reports the feature level. |
| Qualcomm | “Microsoft is collaborating with Qualcomm to bring the benefits of DirectX feature level 12_2 to Snapdragon platforms.” | This described a collaboration, not a model-specific support guarantee. |
All four quotations are from Microsoft’s original announcement. Because the statements vary in timing and certainty, a vendor name or product family alone is not enough to determine whether a particular device supports 12_2 today.
How to check support on a particular GPU
Direct3D feature-level support is reported explicitly by the graphics driver. The runtime does not infer 12_2 support by adding up a device’s individual capabilities. Microsoft’s specification states: “Feature level 12_2 is something explicitly reported by the driver.”

- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
- Identify the exact GPU model and the installed graphics-driver version.
- Check the driver or application’s reported Direct3D feature level for that device. Look for 12_2 rather than assuming it from a DirectX 12 label or individual feature support.
- If the device does not report 12_2, check whether a newer driver is available from the GPU or system manufacturer, then verify the reported level again.
The Microsoft hardware feature-level reference explains feature-level reporting. The available information here does not establish a complete, current support matrix for every AMD, Intel, NVIDIA and Qualcomm GPU, so exact-device and driver verification matters.
What 12_2 means for games and performance
Feature level 12_2 gives developers a defined set of graphics capabilities to target; it does not guarantee a particular frame rate, image quality or performance uplift. The workload, implementation and other system characteristics determine the result. No comparative benchmark follows from the capability specification alone.

Support for the full DirectX 12 Ultimate feature bundle is also different from basic game compatibility. Microsoft says the DirectX 12 Ultimate logo indicates support for the full bundle, but games that use Ultimate features can still run on non-Ultimate hardware without the benefits of features that hardware does not support. A game may use another rendering path rather than making every non-Ultimate GPU incompatible. Microsoft’s DirectX 12 Ultimate announcement explains that distinction.

Microsoft’s March 2026 DirectX update describes work with AMD, Intel, NVIDIA and Qualcomm on GPU developer tools, including DirectX Dump Files and PIX analysis. It concerns tools for diagnosing and analyzing GPU work, not a new 12_2 feature-level or hardware-support announcement. Microsoft’s GDC 2026 update covers that later collaboration.
