In Dungeons & Dragons, a mimic is usually first seen as an ordinary object—often a treasure chest or a door. That disguise can copy the surface texture of materials such as wood or stone. When the creature moves or attacks, the object-like exterior gives way to an amorphous monster that can sprout pseudopods. The chest is a familiar disguise, not a required true form.
What does a mimic look like before it attacks?
Most of the time, it looks like something a character might approach or touch: a chest, door, or another plausible object. The disguise is the point. D&D descriptions say mimics choose forms likely to attract contact, turning curiosity or routine interaction into an opportunity to attack.
Its imitation can include texture as well as shape. A mimic can make its surface resemble basic materials such as wood or stone, helping an object disguise look convincing at a glance. In the 5e-style rules description, a motionless mimic in object form is indistinguishable from an ordinary object.
What is a mimic’s revealed form?
When a mimic reveals itself, it is not simply a normal chest with a creature sitting inside. The object disguise becomes an amorphous attacker that can sprout pseudopods. A chest-form illustration in a D&D Monster Manual shows one interpretation with a mouth, teeth, and an extended tongue; that artwork is a depiction, not a universal specification for every mimic.

Can a mimic look like something other than a chest?
Yes. Chests are the best-known example, but D&D descriptions also name doors and describe mimics taking object forms likely to draw someone close. The exact range of forms and the creature’s physical limits depend on the edition or adaptation, so “any object whatsoever” is broader than the supported description.
Do mimics look different in older D&D editions?
Yes. An AD&D 2nd Edition transcription describes a granite-like, speckled gray natural color and says the creature can imitate materials including marble, wood grain, and metals. A separate d20 SRD transcription gives a typical volume of about 150 cubic feet. Those color and size details belong to those earlier-edition descriptions; they should not be treated as the default appearance or dimensions of every mimic.

- Some miniatures include translucent parts
The useful distinction is between rules description and visual interpretation: an edition may describe how a mimic disguises itself or attacks, while an illustration shows one artist’s version. Neither makes every mimic look like the same chest.

This answer is about the Dungeons & Dragons monster. “Mimic” can also mean real animals, such as the mimic octopus, or creatures from other fictional settings, whose appearances are different subjects.
