R usually means Rare, but SR does not have one universal meaning. In Japanese Pokémon card materials, SR means Super Rare. In the English guide for the older Black & White—Next Destinies set, SR means Shiny Rare. To identify a particular card, check its language and the rarity guide or checklist for its expansion.
What R and SR mean
| Mark | Meaning | Context |
|---|---|---|
| R | Rare | The official English Black & White—Next Destinies guide defines R as Rare. Pokémon’s Japanese card database also includes R as a rarity option. Next Destinies Card-Dex; Pokémon TCG Card Database |
| SR | Super Rare | Pokémon Japan uses SR(スーパーレア) in official Japanese product information. Official Japanese Pokémon Card Game product information |
| SR | Shiny Rare | The official English guide for Black & White—Next Destinies defines SR this way. Next Destinies Card-Dex |
Why SR can mean different things
Rarity labels are tied to a card’s language, set, and era; they are not a single code system shared across every Pokémon card. The Japanese and English examples above use SR differently, so translating the letters without checking the relevant set can lead to the wrong identification.
For a specific card, use the checklist or official card information for the expansion it belongs to. Match the card’s language and set rather than relying on an abbreviation found on a card from another release.
How newer English rarity labels fit
For the Scarlet & Violet series, The Pokémon Company International announced updated rarity symbols on March 30, 2023. It retained the black circle, diamond, and star for common, uncommon, and rare, and described categories including Double Rare, Ultra Rare, and Illustration Rare. The official English card database also has filters for categories such as Special Illustration Rare and Hyper Rare. Scarlet & Violet rarity update; Pokémon TCG Card Database
#1 Best Overall
- 50+ Pokemon Cards
- 5 Holos Guaranteed minimium per order
- 1 GX, EX, V, VMax, Full Art, Tag Team, or Secret Rare
These English category names belong to their own rarity system. Do not assume that a Japanese letter code such as SR maps directly to one of them unless the checklist for the relevant set establishes that connection.

What a rarity mark does not tell you
- Price: A rarity label by itself does not establish a card’s market value.
- Gameplay strength: Rarity does not tell you how useful or powerful a card is in play.
- Pull odds: The official sources cited here define rarity categories, but do not establish a universal probability of pulling an R or SR card. Odds, if published, need to be tied to the exact product and region.
- Other card markings: Do not confuse a rarity mark with a regulation mark or an expansion code.
