Supercell Support puts it plainly: “Star Levels have no effect on gameplay.” They are cosmetic upgrades, separate from normal card levels, which affect combat.
What changes when you upgrade a Star Level?
A Star Level gives an eligible card a visual change. The exact appearance depends on the card, so do not assume every upgrade adds the same effect. You can preview a card’s available Star Level appearance from its card page before spending Star Points.
Do Star Levels make cards stronger?
No. Star Levels do not change a card’s stats, damage, health, or performance in battle. They are distinct from ordinary card-level upgrades, which are the progression system relevant to card strength. How do Star Points and Star Level upgrades work?
- Unlock: Star Points unlock at Arena 5 in the current progression system.
- Eligible cards: A card must be level 7 or higher to receive a Star Level upgrade.
- Available levels: Cards can have up to three Star Levels, but some have fewer.
- Earning points: Card upgrades to level 15 and above do not award Star Points, so not every card upgrade earns them.
These are separate requirements: reaching Arena 5 unlocks Star Points, while the level 7 threshold applies to the card you want to upgrade. For the current official rules, see Supercell’s Cards & Decks support article.

Are Star Levels still in Clash Royale?
Yes. In its 13 May 2026 progression update, Supercell said Star Points are not being removed and Star Levels remain unchanged. The update also lists Arena 5 as the Star Points unlock point under the revised progression system. Supercell: New Collection Levels & Mastery Changes
