A Steam gift card code is the unique Steam Wallet code used to add value to a Steam account. On a physical card, the code is protected on the card; a digital gift card is sent through Steam. Steam does not publish one universal code length or character pattern, so a particular arrangement of letters and numbers cannot prove that a code is genuine.
What the code is—and what it does
Steam describes Wallet codes and gift cards as gift-certificate value that can be redeemed for games, software, and other items available on Steam. The code is for adding value to a Steam Wallet, not a general-purpose payment code. Steam’s Wallet FAQ calls it a “unique wallet code.”

Physical card versus digital gift card

Steam’s published pages do not establish separate fixed code formats for physical and digital gifts, nor a canonical length or complete character template. Do not rely on a listing photo or the apparent shape of a code to establish authenticity.
How to redeem a Steam Wallet code
- Sign in to the Steam account where you want the value added.
- Open Steam’s Wallet code redemption page and enter the code as shown.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. Steam says the value converts to the currency of your Wallet, regardless of where the card was purchased.
Redeemed Wallet value can be used for games, software, and other items sold on Steam.

If your code is not working
- Recheck similar-looking characters. Steam Support notes that 0 can be confused with O, Q, or D; 1 with I; B with 8; and G with 6. Compare the code carefully rather than guessing.
- Allow for retailer activation. Steam says activation can take several hours after purchase.
- Contact Steam Support if it still fails. The Steam Wallet code FAQ asks for a clear image of the entire back of the card and the matching retail receipt.
Protect the code from scams
Treat an exposed Wallet code like cash: anyone who gets it may be able to redeem its value. Steam warns that scammers may pose as authorities or other official agents and demand gift cards for taxes, bail, debts, delivery of money, or supposed prize winnings. They may pressure someone to scratch off the card and send or read out the code. Steam says Wallet cards can only be redeemed on Steam and advises never giving one to someone you do not know. Steam also warns against accepting a digital gift card as payment in a trade: a code could be fake, the card could later be charged back, or it could have been purchased with fraudulent details. Steam Support’s trading-scam guidance covers this risk.

For physical cards, the FTC’s gift-card scam advice recommends inspecting a card before purchase because criminals may tamper with protective packaging or stickers. This is general gift-card guidance, not proof that every Steam card has been tampered with.
