In Fortnite, the color of a weapon or item icon signals its rarity. Epic’s developer documentation states that items communicate rarity in the HUD through colored icon backgrounds. The commonly used key runs gray for Common, green for Uncommon, blue for Rare, purple for Epic, and gold/orange for Legendary. Epic’s documentation confirms the color-coded system but does not spell out each color pairing, so that specific mapping comes from a third-party games wiki rather than from Epic itself.
Fortnite also uses colors in two other places that have nothing to do with weapon rarity: the cosmetic quality tiers that once appeared in the Item Shop and Locker, and the rank-linked styles on certain outfits. This guide covers all three so you can tell which system you are looking at.
How weapon and item rarity colors work
Rarity is the main meaning behind colors on weapons and most items. Epic’s Rarity Component documentation describes the rarity ladder in ascending order: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. The color associated with each step is shown on the item’s HUD icon background, which is the cue to read when you are deciding between two weapons on the ground or in a chest.
The table below lists the color for each tier as it is commonly described. Only the presence of color-coded rarity is confirmed by Epic’s documentation; the specific color names are from the third-party wiki cited in the note beneath the table.

| Rarity tier | Commonly cited icon background color | Source for the color |
|---|---|---|
| Common | Gray | Third-party wiki (Guild Order, Fortnite Loot System) |
| Uncommon | Green | Third-party wiki (same page) |
| Rare | Blue | Third-party wiki (same page) |
| Epic | Purple | Third-party wiki (same page) |
| Legendary | Gold/orange | Third-party wiki (same page) |
| Mythic | Not stated | Epic’s Fortnite Weapons Primer lists Mythic above Legendary for weapons; no color is given in the sources reviewed |
Two practical points follow from the table. First, if a weapon’s icon color does not match the table, trust the in-game icon over any list, since the list is a secondary description. Second, Mythic is a weapon-only tier in the sense that Epic’s primer places it in its weapon rarity list, so do not assume every item category has a Mythic tier.
What a higher rarity changes on a weapon
A higher rarity does not just change the color. According to Epic’s Weapons Primer, rarity can affect damage, magazine capacity, spread, recoil, and other weapon characteristics. That makes rarity a meaningful stat signal, but it does not guarantee the best choice in every fight. A Rare weapon with a larger magazine and tighter spread may suit a long-range situation better than a higher-tier weapon with worse handling, and the right pick depends on the mode and on what you are trying to do.
When comparing two weapons, look at the specific values that matter to you (damage, magazine size, spread, and recoil) rather than the color alone.
Three color systems to keep separate
Fortnite uses colors for different purposes in different places. Confusing them is the most common source of mistakes when people talk about “color tiers.”
Weapon and item rarity
This is the system described above. The icon background shows where an item sits on the rarity ladder, and that ladder affects weapon characteristics.

Cosmetic quality in the Shop and Locker
Older Fortnite cosmetics carried a quality color and tag drawn from the Battle Royale-inspired system. Epic announced on April 9, 2024, in its Shop and Locker changes post, that it was retiring this system alongside the v29.20 update. The announcement explained the reason directly: “The Shop has evolved significantly to support multiple types of cosmetics and items across games, so we’re retiring the old Battle Royale-inspired system of colors and tags for cosmetic quality.”
Cosmetic series labels such as Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series remained after that change. If you see a series label on an outfit, it is a collection or source tag, not a quality color. Do not apply the old cosmetic color tiers as if they were a universal quality measure.
Ranked outfit colors
Some outfits display a player’s rank, and their colors can reflect that rank. Epic’s Player Support article on Ranked items says these outfits can show colors up to the highest rank achieved during the season in which the outfit was obtained. Epic’s example: a player who owns an Odyssey outfit and reaches Gold can choose the Bronze, Silver, and Gold styles. These colors describe rank-linked styles, not weapon rarity, so an outfit’s gold style does not indicate a Legendary item.

Rarity colors have been adjusted before. In Epic’s v3.4 patch notes, published March 28, 2018, Epic said shotgun rarity colors were adjusted to better represent how effective those shotguns were. The same notes stated that shotgun damage and drop chances did not change. That is useful as background on how Epic has treated color as a communication tool, but it is not a current balance guide, and it should not be used to judge today’s weapons.
