In Dark Deception, the Murder Monkeys represent the souls of murderers who surrendered their humanity to violence. That explanation comes from an in-game note attributed to E and reproduced by the community-maintained Murder Monkeys lore page. A separate reading connects the creatures to protagonist Doug’s violent past, but that is an interpretation—not confirmed creator intent.
What the game says the Murder Monkeys represent
E’s first note describes the monkeys as monstrous forms containing the souls of murderers. In the note, those people abandoned their humanity, gave in to the urge to kill, and became monsters. In short, the explicit lore links the Murder Monkeys to murder and unchecked violence.
“I’ve learned that the mortal souls of murderers are imprisoned inside each one. In life, they abandoned their humanity. They gave in to their urge to kill. They chose to become monsters.”
This is fictional dialogue attributed to E, reproduced by the community wiki; it is not a real-world quotation from a developer. The note also says the souls’ mutterings are no longer human and calls the kitchen monkeys’ wishes especially violent.

Are the monkeys also a symbol of Doug’s past?
The same community lore page suggests the Murder Monkeys may reflect violence in Doug’s own past. That is a symbolic interpretation of the characters, not a meaning confirmed by a developer in the sources available. The in-game note establishes the murder-and-violence explanation; the Doug connection should be treated as an additional reading.
What their design adds—and what it does not prove
The lore entry describes the Murder Monkeys as mechanical toy monkeys carrying knives and wearing bellhop uniforms. Those details make them unsettling hotel-themed enemies, but the design alone does not establish a canonical backstory for the uniforms. The page’s speculation about why they wear bellhop clothes should not be mistaken for confirmed lore.

“Monkey Business” is broader than the question of what the Murder Monkeys represent: it refers to a level context, not a separate explanation of their symbolism. The clearest answer to the symbolism question remains the one E gives in the note: these enemies are tied to human souls consumed by murder and violence.
