Paradox’s feature announcement lists new Chinese national focuses, updated German and Japanese focus content, and changes to command, political decisions, army adaptation, equipment capture, and air warfare. It launched alongside a separate free game update, so the expansion’s announced features should not be confused with everything in that patch.
What does Waking the Tiger add?
Paradox Development Studio described the expansion as focused on China, calling it “the first front of the Second World War.” That is the studio’s characterization in its announcement, rather than an independently established historical ranking. The feature list combines national-focus content with systems intended to affect command and campaigning.
China, Japan, and Germany
- China: New national focuses, with the announcement highlighting China’s manpower and diplomatic flexibility.
- Japan: Updated focus content, including alternate-history routes involving restoration of civilian government or an alliance with the Soviet Union.
- Germany: Updated focus content that includes the possibility of restoring the Kaiser or pursuing a democratic Germany.
In other words, the announced new or revised focus content covers China, Japan, and Germany. Paradox’s feature announcement is the source for this list: the Waking the Tiger announcement.
Command, decisions, and army systems
- Field marshals and generals: A chain-of-command system lets field marshals use skills from generals under their command.
- Decisions and missions: Political Power can be spent on domestic politics or special projects.
- Commander abilities: Commander traits can unlock abilities that use Command Power.
- Acclimatization: Troops can adapt to operating in desert or harsh winter conditions.
- Equipment and air warfare: The announcement also lists battlefield equipment capture and changes to the air war, including volunteer air wings.
These are features as described in the official announcement; the announcement itself does not establish how they perform in play or how they compare in balance.

Is Waking the Tiger separate from the free update?
Yes. Paradox announced Waking the Tiger as an expansion and said its release would be accompanied by a free major update for all Hearts of Iron players. The earlier feature announcement identifies that patch as version 1.5, “Cornflakes.” The expansion and the free patch were therefore related parts of the release, but they were not the same thing.
The release notice gave March 8, 2018 as the expansion’s availability date. See Paradox’s release announcement for the date and free-update context.

Who is the expansion most relevant to?
The announced content points most directly to players interested in the Chinese front and wider Asian campaigns, especially China’s new focus content and Japan’s revised paths. The German focus changes offer a separate draw for players interested in alternate-history routes in Europe. The command and army systems are broader additions beyond those country-specific paths.
The official announcements establish the expansion’s historical release and advertised features, but they do not establish its current standalone availability, price, bundle inclusion, or ownership requirements. Check a current official Paradox or authorized store listing for those details.
