In Roblox, Massless is a BasePart property that controls whether a part adds to its rigid assembly’s total mass and inertia. It excludes a part only when that part is welded to another part that has mass. If the Massless part is the assembly root, Roblox ignores the property and the part still contributes to mass and inertia.
What the Massless property changes
Massless is a physics property, not a visual or collision setting. When enabled on a welded part, it keeps that part from contributing to the assembly’s total mass or inertia, provided another part in the assembly has mass. Roblox documents this behavior in its BasePart reference.
So “massless” does not mean a part is always weightless in every situation. The weld and assembly-root conditions determine whether the property has the documented effect.
Why the assembly root matters
Every Roblox assembly has a root part. If a part with Massless enabled becomes that root, Roblox ignores its Massless setting: it continues to contribute to the assembly’s mass and inertia. The BasePart reference cautions against making a Massless part the root unless every part in the assembly is also Massless.

Root selection has other physics implications: Roblox uses the root to represent the assembly for transforms and consistent physics replication. Its assemblies guide describes selection factors including anchored state, Massless state, RootPriority, and part size and type. RootPriority is a separate property; it is not another name for Massless.
When to use Massless
Roblox’s documented examples include optional vehicle accessories that should not affect handling and a render mesh welded to a simpler collision mesh. In both cases, the point is to keep an attached part from adding to the physical assembly’s mass and inertia—not to remove its appearance or collision behavior.

Why Massless may appear to do nothing
Check whether the part is welded into the assembly and whether another part in that assembly has mass. A part that is not welded into the relevant assembly does not meet the documented condition. Also check whether the Massless part became the assembly root; if it did, Roblox ignores the property for that part. A Roblox Developer Forum discussion, “What does massless actually do?”, offers community troubleshooting context, while the Creator Hub reference defines the property’s behavior.
