Why Fallout 76 is the strongest current answer
Bethesda describes Fallout 76 as an open-world game set in Appalachia, with six distinct regions and a world that continues to expand through regular updates. On December 11, 2025, Bethesda released Burning Springs, a new region in rural Ohio, and described it as Fallout 76’s largest map expansion to date. That makes the game the clearest answer when “biggest map” means the current explorable world after updates. The announcement gives no total area for Fallout 76, however, and compares Burning Springs only with previous Fallout 76 expansions. Bethesda’s Burning Springs update notes
What counts as a Fallout map?
- Main open world: Fallout 76’s Appalachia is the core map, divided into six regions.
- Separate destinations: Atlantic City and The Pitt are presented as Expedition destinations outside Appalachia, so including them changes what “map size” means.
- Added regions: Burning Springs expands the game’s world, but its status as Fallout 76’s largest expansion does not establish that Fallout 76 has the largest measured land area in the franchise.
These distinctions matter because a game’s depicted geography, traversable space, and separate playable destinations are not necessarily measured the same way.

What the Fallout 3 size figure does—and doesn’t—show
Guinness World Records lists Fallout 3 as the holder of “Largest world in a Fallout videogame,” with an estimated 15 square miles (24 km²) of traversable land and a record date of October 28, 2008. Guinness World Records’ Fallout entry
This is a dated estimate for Fallout 3, not a current, standardized comparison of every later Fallout release and expansion. It should not be used to claim that Fallout 3 remains the series leader: the Guinness entry does not supply comparable current measurements for Fallout 76 or other later games.

Is there a definitive biggest-to-smallest ranking?
No precise cross-series ranking is established by the available official figures. Bethesda’s material describes Fallout 76’s expanding world and its latest major map addition, while Guinness provides a historical Fallout 3 estimate. Those sources do not measure all games on a shared basis.
GamesRadar reported in February 2026 that Fallout 76 creative director Jon Rush described earlier additions as “literal expansions of the map,” making the play space bigger. This supports the fact that the game’s map has grown, but it is not a measured comparison with other Fallout titles. GamesRadar’s report on Fallout 76 map expansions

Bottom line: Choose Fallout 76 as the best-supported answer for the biggest Fallout map today, but treat that as a conclusion based on its expanding world—not a verified square-mile ranking across the whole series.
