It means the item drops less often than a Common item, not that it is automatically much stronger. Compare its power, enchantments and fit for your build before swapping gear.
What the Rare label means
The original Minecraft Dungeons has three item rarity levels—Common, Rare and Unique—shown with different colors. Gear and artifacts can carry these labels. The Minecraft Wiki’s item reference describes rarity as an item attribute.
Rare items are less likely to drop than Common items, but the available references give no exact percentage odds. Mojang’s September 2020 update article likewise said Common items appeared most frequently. That is a qualitative comparison, not a drop-rate table.
Does Rare mean an item is better?
Not necessarily. Rare and Common versions generally have similar attributes, so the rarity label alone does not establish that an item is substantially stronger. Check the item’s actual power and the enchantments available on it, then judge whether those options support your build.

- Build fit: A lower-rarity item can be the more useful choice if its power and enchantments suit your needs better.
How Rare affects costs and salvaging
Compared with Common items, Rare items cost more to purchase, gift-wrap or upgrade, and return more emeralds when salvaged. Those differences matter when you are deciding whether to spend resources on a Rare item or recover emeralds from one you no longer need. They do not make rarity a universal measure of usefulness.
When Rare items appear as rewards
Mojang’s September 2020 update article described a specific daily-trial reward: an end-of-mission reward was usually a random Rare or Unique gear piece or artifact, with power slightly above what players would normally find at their recommended difficulty. This is a dated description of that activity, not a guarantee for every mission or a statement of current reward odds.

Does this apply to Minecraft Dungeons II?
No assumption should be made that the original game’s rarity system carries over. Minecraft Dungeons II is a separate game, and material about it uses a different rarity vocabulary. Check that game’s own item descriptions and mechanics rather than applying the original game’s Common–Rare–Unique labels to it.
