In the original route, the Old Key unlocks a gate in Old Lumière. Behind it is the Survivor journal, a collectible tied to the Follow the Trail journal objective—not a weapon or combat upgrade.
Where to use the Old Key
Travel to Old Lumière and start from the Left Street rest point. While controlling Maelle, go through the broken archway and find the large pipe. Drop through its opening, then turn around to face the locked gate and use the Old Key. The Survivor journal is behind the gate. Gamer Guides’ walkthrough describes this route.

How to get the key
On the original route, the Old Key is obtained during the Prologue festival by exchanging a Festival Token at a stall. If you have already spent a token, festival activities can provide other opportunities to earn one, according to PowerPyx’s journal guide. The key is used later in Old Lumière, not at the festival.
Can you still get the Survivor journal if you missed the Prologue key?
Yes, the original Prologue-only warning has been superseded by a later update. Version 1.5.0 patch notes attributed to the Expedition 33 Team say an Old Key was added to the game’s final area to give players a second chance to collect all journals. The notes do not establish the precise pickup location or prerequisites, so there is no verified route to provide here. The patch notes were reposted on r/SandfallGames.

PowerPyx’s May 2025 guide describes the original key and journal as missable and says the game has 49 journals associated with the Follow the Trail trophy or achievement. That guidance predates the 1.5.0 addition; do not treat the original missability warning as a current permanent lockout.
