In a January 9, 2026 update, the company said The Sims 4 will continue receiving content and updates, reaffirmed plans for future single-player PC and console Sims experiences, and described Project Rene as a separate social, mobile-first project.
What did EA announce about The Sims?
In its January 9, 2026 announcement, EA said it remains committed to improving The Sims 4 and will continue delivering content and updates. The company also said single-player PC and console experiences “will always be a part of our future.”
EA added that more than half of its global development team is dedicated to The Sims 4 and “the next evolution.” That is EA’s own description of its team allocation; the announcement gives no exact percentage and does not identify a release date or detailed feature list for the next single-player experience.
Is The Sims 4 ending?
EA’s statement says the game will keep receiving content and updates, so it does not announce an end to The Sims 4. It also does not set out a long-term release schedule or say how long updates will continue. The supported takeaway is that EA plans to keep developing the game, not that every future detail is settled.

- Create Vampires

- Live the Immortal Life
Is Project Rene The Sims 5?
No. EA explicitly says Project Rene is not the successor to The Sims 4. It describes Rene as focused on social multiplayer play and designed mobile-first, separate from any future deep single-player life-simulation experience.
| Experience | What EA says about its role | Format or focus |
|---|---|---|
| The Sims 4 | Ongoing content and updates | Current game; EA’s announcement does not specify a new format change |
| Project Rene | Separate from The Sims 4’s successor and from a future deep single-player life-simulation experience | Social multiplayer; mobile-first |
| Future single-player Sims experience | EA says single-player PC and console experiences remain part of its future | PC and console; details and release date not stated |
What do Sims Labs tests mean?
EA says playtesting across multiple Sims products and experiences will continue in 2026. It cautions that Sims Labs tests and prototypes are works in progress: concepts may change, and some experiments will not move forward. A project name or test therefore should not be read as confirmation of a finished game or launch.

- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
Why the headline can sound more alarming than the news
“Officially panicking” is not a finding from EA or a measured survey of Sims players. The actual announcement draws a distinction between an ongoing Sims 4, a social mobile-first Project Rene, and future single-player experiences. PC Gamer’s same-day coverage also discussed fan confusion and disappointment, but that commentary does not establish how the wider player community feels.
EA says it is building experiences across PC, console, and mobile. Its January statement does not provide a timetable or specifications for the next single-player experience, so claims that a particular unannounced game has been cancelled, renamed, or confirmed for release go beyond what the update establishes.
