An Xbox gift card adds funds to your Microsoft account. Besides games, you may be able to spend that balance on game add-ons, apps, movies, TV shows, some Xbox subscriptions, and eligible devices such as controllers. What qualifies depends on the Microsoft Store catalog and rules for your account’s region.
What can you buy with Xbox gift-card balance?
After you redeem the code, its value becomes Microsoft account balance. You can use that balance through participating Microsoft Store storefronts, including online, on Windows, or on Xbox where the item is available. It is not a general-purpose payment card for other retailers.

Microsoft describes these categories in its gift-card information, code redemption guidance, Xbox Store information, and Microsoft Rewards device listing. The eligible catalog is not a single worldwide list, so a category being supported does not guarantee every product is available to every account.
Can you use an Xbox gift card for Game Pass?
Xbox gift-card balance may be used for Xbox subscriptions, which includes eligible Xbox subscription purchases such as Game Pass. Microsoft’s account-balance guidance says gift-card funds can buy Xbox subscriptions, but the exact subscription offer and billing options depend on the market and checkout. Some app subscriptions require a credit card, and Microsoft says gift-card balance cannot be used to buy Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Can you buy movies, apps, or in-app content?
Potentially. Microsoft lists apps, movies, TV shows, add-ons, and in-game content among the things available through its store. The key distinction is where you are buying: a purchase offered through an eligible Microsoft Store checkout may accept account balance, while a transaction processed by a separate app provider or retailer is not automatically covered. For subscriptions within apps, Microsoft specifically cautions that some require a credit card.
Can you buy an Xbox controller or other hardware?
Some Microsoft Store devices and physical goods can be eligible purchases; Microsoft Rewards’ device listing names Xbox controllers as an example. That is not a promise that every controller, accessory, or hardware item can be bought with balance in every country. Check the product listing and the payment methods shown at checkout. Microsoft’s terms also identify a hardware restriction in Taiwan.

How to redeem and spend the balance
- Redeem the code to your Microsoft account. Follow Microsoft’s prepaid-code redemption instructions. Redemption adds the card’s value to the account rather than leaving it as a card for use at unrelated stores.
- Shop in a participating Microsoft Store. Find the game, content, app, entertainment, subscription, or device in the store serving your account’s region.
- Review checkout before confirming. Check whether account balance is offered and whether the purchase requests another payment method. This matters especially for subscriptions and app transactions.
What an Xbox gift card cannot do
- It cannot be treated as cash. Microsoft’s terms exclude cash and cash substitutes such as gift certificates, subject to applicable law.
- It is not for Microsoft retail locations. The terms exclude use at Microsoft retail locations.
- It does not pay for every subscription. Gift-card balance is limited to Xbox subscriptions under Microsoft’s guidance, and Microsoft says it cannot buy Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
- It does not work as a payment method at arbitrary retailers. Spend it through eligible Microsoft Store channels rather than expecting another merchant, such as Amazon, to accept Microsoft account balance.
These restrictions and regional conditions are set out in Microsoft’s Services Agreement. Applicable law and the store tied to your account can affect the rules.
