For a survival Elytra, prioritize Mending I and Unbreaking III. Mending repairs the Elytra when you gain XP orbs, while Unbreaking increases its durability. Add both with enchanted books at an anvil; neither is a reason to choose a different Elytra.
Which Elytra enchantments are worth using?

Mending and Unbreaking complement each other: one helps restore durability through XP, and the other helps preserve it. For the typical survival setup, use both and skip the curses.
How do you put Mending and Unbreaking on an Elytra?
Combine the Elytra with enchanted books in an anvil. Minecraft’s official anvil guide explains applying book enchantments to gear, while the community-maintained Elytra reference says Elytra cannot be enchanted on an enchanting table.
- Get enchanted books for Mending I and Unbreaking III.
- Open an anvil and place the Elytra and book in its input slots.
- Take the resulting Elytra if the displayed experience cost is available to you.
- Repeat with the other book if needed.
Anvils can combine durability and merge enchantments, but repeated prior work raises the cost. The Elytra reference describes an eventual “too expensive” limit, so avoid repeatedly combining or repairing the same item without considering the displayed cost.

How do you repair an Elytra?
Use a phantom membrane with the Elytra in an anvil. Minecraft’s official anvil article names phantom membranes as the Elytra repair material. If you do not yet have Mending, this is a documented repair option; the anvil’s increasing prior-work cost still matters when you repair the same Elytra repeatedly.
Should you use Curse of Vanishing?
Only if you deliberately prefer the Elytra to disappear on death rather than risk another player obtaining it. Curse of Vanishing is not a protection or durability enchantment: its explicit trade-off is losing the item when you die. For most valuable survival Elytra, leave it off.

Does gliding with rockets affect Elytra durability?
Do not treat the often-repeated rocket-only durability claim as a general current rule. Mojang stated in a July 13, 2021 article about an experimental Java snapshot that “Elytra doesn’t take durability damage when gliding, only when using rockets.” That statement described testing in that snapshot, not a reliable current rule for Minecraft generally: Mojang’s experimental snapshot article.
