Steam Deck can play a broad, changing selection of games from Steam, including many Windows releases that run through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. To find games that suit you, browse Steam’s current Verified and Playable filters, then check the individual game listing for its latest compatibility status.
What kinds of games are available on Steam Deck?
The Steam Deck draws on the Steam library, so its playable selection spans many genres and includes both native Linux games and Windows games that work on SteamOS with Proton. Valve describes SteamOS as Linux-based and says Proton lets the vast majority of the Steam library run on it. The practical way to judge any one game, however, is to check its current Steam Deck compatibility information in the Steam Store.
Valve’s SteamOS FAQ has said that “over 18,000 titles” ran through Proton “last we checked.” Valve does not date that check in the cited passage, so treat the figure as an undated historical statement—not a current count of Steam Deck-compatible games. Valve’s SteamOS page also explains that its compatibility program calls out games that do not run well on SteamOS so customers can better understand what will and will not work well.
How to find games that work on Steam Deck

Open the Steam Deck Verified or Steam Deck Playable search filter.

Narrow the results using Steam’s available filters, such as genre, controller support, and price-related options, to match what you want to play.

Check the game’s own Steam Store listing before buying or installing. Compatibility classifications can change, and the store can sort results by compatibility review date to help you find more recently reviewed titles.

The filters are useful discovery tools, not a guarantee that a game will remain in the same category indefinitely. Steam’s live catalog changes, so an old list or a past search result may not reflect a game’s current status.
Examples from Steam’s compatibility filters
At the time of the catalog snapshots described in the cited Steam searches, the Verified results included Warframe, ELDEN RING, Valheim, and Baldur’s Gate 3. The Playable results included Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, ELDEN RING, and Red Dead Redemption 2. These examples show the range of well-known games surfaced by the filters; they are not a permanent list, a recommendation, or a claim about performance from hands-on testing.

Valve’s search pages are live: Verified catalog and Playable catalog. Check the current listing for any title you are considering rather than relying on an example’s past appearance in a filter.

Valve presents the compatibility program as a way to flag games that do not run well on SteamOS and help customers understand what to expect. The Verified and Playable filters let you browse games by Valve’s compatibility classification, and the store exposes a compatibility-review-date sort. The specific definitions and criteria for every status are not established here, so do not assume that a label answers every question about a particular game, setup, or update.

For browsing: start with the Verified or Playable filter, then refine by genre, controller support, or price.

For a specific purchase: open that game’s current Steam listing and review its compatibility information.
