To tame a creature for your C.A.M.P. in Fallout 76’s legacy guard system, equip Animal Friend at rank 3, have at least 3 Charisma, and search random encounter locations for an eligible animal. A listed location is only a hunting spot: encounters are random, and a tameable creature is not guaranteed. Stay connected until the animal reaches your C.A.M.P.; Bethesda says it will disappear if you disconnect before then.
This FAQ covers the legacy taming mechanic as checked on October 4, 2026. It is separate from C.A.M.P. Pets and the planned World Pets companion system.
What do you need to tame a creature?
- Animal Friend, rank 3: Bethesda says this rank gives a 75% chance to tame qualifying animals and send them to a C.A.M.P. The perk’s listed chances are 25% at rank 1, 50% at rank 2, and 75% at rank 3. These are perk chances, not an overall guarantee that a creature will spawn or be tamed. Bethesda Support.
- At least 3 Charisma: Bethesda lists three Charisma points as necessary to tame. Bethesda Support.
A June 2025 community guide advises equipping Animal Friend before you visit an encounter point, because it may affect the encounter’s spawn check. That timing detail is community guidance rather than a rule stated in Bethesda’s support article. The same guide says Wasteland Whisperer is not required for ordinary taming; Bethesda’s support page does not address every perk interaction. The Duchess Flame’s taming guide.
Where can you find a tameable animal?
Look for community-reported random encounter locations, not just places where ordinary versions of an animal appear. A location may produce one of many scenes, and only some encounters yield a tameable creature. A 2026 community location guide describes these spots as chances rather than fixed pet spawns and cautions that older maps may be outdated after map and location changes. Use a recently updated map or guide with screenshots, and treat its points as places to check—not guaranteed spawns. The Duchess Flame’s location guide.

Repeated visits can turn up unrelated encounter scenes. The 2026 guide suggests remote points may be useful when looking for larger, rarer creatures, but this is anecdotal route advice, not a measured comparison of spawn odds. No authoritative location-by-location spawn rate is established in the cited material.
How do you attempt the tame?
- Before travelling: Equip Animal Friend at rank 3 and confirm you have at least 3 Charisma. Community guidance recommends having the perk equipped before reaching the encounter point.
- Visit a reported random encounter point: Search for a qualifying creature, remembering that other encounter outcomes are possible.
- Approach and check the prompt: Community instructions say to get close enough for the Tame prompt, then confirm the option to send the animal to your C.A.M.P. If you see only Pacify, the guide suggests moving closer. Prompt behavior can vary, and player reports differ on edge cases, so do not assume a prompt will appear for every creature. The Duchess Flame’s taming guide.
- Remain connected while it travels: Bethesda says the animal walks toward your C.A.M.P. and will disappear if you disconnect before it arrives. Bethesda Support.
What can go wrong, and what are the limits?
The trip back can be dangerous
The animal has to make its way to camp. A community location guide warns that hostile enemies may spawn in the player’s cell and that escorting the creature may increase its exposure to danger. This is player advice, not an official guarantee about pathing or enemy behavior. Community discussion also reports that fragile creatures can die before taming or on the return trip; those reports do not establish a definitive ranking of which creatures are safest. The Duchess Flame’s location guide.

There is one guard slot, and no respawn
Bethesda says only one tamed animal can guard a C.A.M.P. at a time, and tamed animals cannot respawn. Consider that permanent loss risk before choosing a vulnerable or difficult-to-replace creature. Bethesda Support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is legacy taming the same as a C.A.M.P. Pet?
No. Legacy taming sends a qualifying creature from a random encounter to guard your C.A.M.P. Community guides distinguish that mechanic from the newer C.A.M.P. Pets feature. The Duchess Flame’s guide.

Bethesda’s September 2026 roadmap says World Pets is planned for December 2026 and describes C.A.M.P. Pets becoming companions with Stay, Follow, Protect, and Kill commands. That is a planned feature, not confirmation of final live behavior. Bethesda’s September PTS notes describe testing of pet leveling and commands, along with known issues; test notes likewise do not establish how the finished system will behave. Bethesda’s June 2026 release notes also list a Deathclaw C.A.M.P. Pet available through a Deathclaw Pet Upgrade Bundle or Deathclaw Pet Deluxe Edition on Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam stores.
