The official material for Gears of War: E-Day clarifies how Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago were connected before the Locust invasion, but it does not identify or confirm the “20-year-old fan theory” described in the headline. The Coalition calls the game an origin story for their bond and says the two were already best friends, connected through Dom’s brother Carlos.
What did the official E-Day material establish about Marcus and Dom?
In a June 9, 2024 interview, The Coalition described E-Day as the origin story of Marcus and Dom’s bond. Studio Creative Director Matt Searcy said, “We’re telling the origin story of Marcus and Dom and their bond… this is the bond that defines the franchise.” The interview also says the two were best friends and that their connection ran through Dom’s older brother, Carlos, who died on the battlefield with Marcus. The characters are portrayed as being in the early stages of forming a kinship around that shared loss. Xbox Wire’s interview with The Coalition

Does that officially debunk a 20-year-old fan theory?
Not on the evidence available in the official sources cited here. The interview provides context about Marcus, Dom and Carlos, but it does not name a fan theory or explicitly say that the game debunks one. Without knowing which theory the headline means, it would be misleading to claim that the developers confirmed or disproved it. The supported conclusion is narrower: E-Day explores the origins of Marcus and Dom’s relationship, including their connection through Carlos.

Xbox describes Gears of War: E-Day as taking place fourteen years before the original Gears of War. Its story follows Marcus and Dom as the Locust Horde first erupts. The game is a third-person cover shooter developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios. The official Xbox game page
