Minecraft is not aimed at one gender: it is for players of all genders. Minecraft’s official guidance describes a broad, all-ages audience, while age ratings address age suitability—not whether the game is for boys or girls. A 2022 survey of children and young people in the UK found boys were more likely than girls to play Minecraft, but that participation finding does not define the game’s intended audience.
Does Minecraft target boys or girls?
No. Minecraft’s official materials do not name a gender as its target audience. Its Parents’ Guide says the game has “players of all ages,” and its general description presents Minecraft as a game with different ways to explore and play. That supports an inclusive, broad audience—not a boys-only or girls-only design.
The game’s recommended ratings are PEGI 7 and ESRB Everyone 10+. Those classifications provide age guidance; they are not gender labels.
What can players do in Minecraft?
Minecraft offers different play styles rather than gender-specific versions. Players can build and experiment in Creative mode, gather resources and contend with survival challenges in Survival mode, or choose between single-player and multiplayer. These options let people approach the game in different ways; they do not imply that one gender is expected to prefer a particular mode.

Are boys more likely than girls to play Minecraft?
In its 2022 report on children’s and parents’ media use and attitudes in the UK, Ofcom said boys were more likely than girls to play Minecraft. That is a directional finding about children and young people surveyed in the UK, not evidence that Minecraft is designed for boys.
Ofcom also reported that 49% of 3–17-year-olds who played games had played creative and building games such as Roblox and Minecraft. That figure refers to the combined category and examples; it is not a Minecraft-only participation rate. The report passage does not establish a precise Minecraft percentage by gender.

Does that tell us Minecraft’s worldwide player gender breakdown?
No. The Ofcom result is specific to the UK and the report’s 2022 survey. It does not establish a current worldwide gender breakdown, or say how all genders play Minecraft today. Official Minecraft pages describe the game’s audience and age guidance, not the gender demographics of its players.

Yes. Minecraft is not restricted to boys, and its official guidance does not assign the game to one gender. The UK survey’s finding that boys were more likely to play describes a difference in participation among the surveyed group; it does not mean girls do not play or that the game is intended only for boys.
