After Battlefield 4, the series released Battlefield Hardline, Battlefield 1, Battlefield V, Battlefield 2042, and Battlefield 6. They are not chapters in one continuous campaign: the settings jump from the First World War to a near-future conflict, with Battlefield 2042 providing the clearest direct story link to BF4 through the return of Kimble “Irish” Graves.
Which Battlefield games came after BF4?
The release sequence is Hardline, Battlefield 1, Battlefield V, Battlefield 2042, then Battlefield 6. EA’s current Battlefield catalog lists the franchise lineup, while the dates below come from Steam listings and EA’s Battlefield 6 launch announcement.
| Game | Release information | How it relates to BF4 |
|---|---|---|
| Battlefield Hardline | Released after BF4; an exact launch date is not stated in the cited EA catalog. | A separate franchise entry, not the next chapter in BF4’s campaign. |
| Battlefield 1 | October 20, 2016, as listed by Steam. | Moves the setting back to the First World War. |
| Battlefield V | November 9, 2018, as listed by Steam. | A historical setting rather than a continuation of BF4’s modern-war story. |
| Battlefield 2042 | November 19, 2021, as listed by Steam. | A near-future setting that brings back BF4 character Irish. |
| Battlefield 6 | Launched October 10, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, according to EA. | The next mainline release after 2042, not a direct campaign follow-up to BF4. |
For reference, Steam lists Battlefield 4 as released on October 29, 2013. Treat this as release history, not a single chronological campaign order: the games vary in setting and story, and an entry’s number does not mean it follows BF4’s plot.
Is Battlefield 2042 a sequel to Battlefield 4?
Battlefield 2042 is set in a near future and includes a direct continuity callback, but the franchise’s intervening games do not create one uninterrupted numbered campaign series. EA identifies Kimble “Irish” Graves, a BF4 character, as returning in 2042 as a prominent No-Pat leader and playable Specialist. That makes 2042 the clearest answer if you want to follow a BF4 character into a later game.

EA describes 2042’s world as destabilized by climate disruption and dwindling resources, with displaced people organized as No-Pats amid tension between the United States and Russia. Its near-future premise is distinct from Battlefield 1, which goes back to World War I.
What happened to Battlefield 2042 after its seasons ended?
On April 9, 2024, EA announced that Season 7 would be Battlefield 2042’s final official season. EA said it would continue maintenance, events, modes, and in-game challenges after seasonal releases stopped. The announcement therefore marked the end of official seasons—not an immediate shutdown of the game.
