The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) uses AMD Radeon integrated graphics built into its AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor platform. ASUS’s Canadian specification lists the graphics engine as AMD RDNA 3 with 12 compute units, a maximum clock of 2.7 GHz and up to 8.6 teraflops. Those are vendor-published specifications, not independent game benchmarks.

“Integrated” means the GPU is part of the processor platform and uses the handheld’s system memory and shared power budget rather than having a separate graphics card with its own dedicated VRAM. The optional ROG XG Mobile is a different product: it is an external GPU connected through USB4, not an upgrade to the Ally X’s built-in Radeon graphics.

The regional wording matters. ASUS’s US page identifies the GPU as AMD Radeon Graphics but does not repeat the architecture, compute-unit, clock or teraflop details. Therefore, the detailed figures above should be attributed to the Canadian specification rather than presented as identical wording on every regional page.

Which Ally model is this?

ASUS has used similar names for different handhelds. The subject here is the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, RC73XA, built around Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme. It is not the 2024 ROG Ally X, which uses the earlier Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform. A retailer listing that says only “Ally X” may therefore be ambiguous; check the model code and processor before treating its GPU details as applicable.

What “integrated graphics” means in this handheld

The GPU is on the processor platform

A discrete graphics card places a separate GPU package, its own high-speed memory and a dedicated board power budget in a computer. The Ally X takes the handheld approach: the Radeon graphics engine is integrated into the same processor platform as the CPU. That saves board space and avoids the weight, cooling hardware and battery demand of a separate graphics card.

It uses shared system memory

The graphics engine does not have a removable bank of dedicated VRAM. It draws from the handheld’s LPDDR5X system memory through the processor’s memory controller. Windows and games allocate part of that pool for textures, frame buffers and other graphics data while the CPU uses the remainder. The exact split can change with the operating system, game and workload, so the installed memory figure is not the same thing as guaranteed graphics memory.

CPU, GPU and NPU share limits

The Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform contains CPU cores, the Radeon GPU and a separate XDNA neural-processing unit. They share the handheld’s thermal envelope and battery. When a game raises GPU demand, firmware can devote more of the available power and cooling capacity to graphics; when a workload is CPU-heavy, the balance can shift. This dynamic behavior is why a specification-sheet clock is not a promise that the GPU will hold that frequency in every game or battery condition.

Understanding the RDNA 3 figures

Compute units

A compute unit is a repeatable block of shader and fixed-function resources in AMD’s GPU design. The Canadian listing’s 12-CU figure indicates the width of this integrated graphics engine, but compute-unit count alone does not determine frame rate. Memory bandwidth, clock behavior, game-engine efficiency, resolution, graphics settings and the handheld’s selected power mode all affect the result.

Clock speed

“Up to 2.7 GHz” describes the highest listed graphics frequency under suitable conditions. Real operation can be lower when the Ally X is running on battery, sharing power with the CPU, protecting skin temperatures or responding to a demanding scene. It is best read as a maximum specification, not as a fixed speed that every title receives.

Teraflops

The listed 8.6-teraflop figure is a theoretical arithmetic-throughput ceiling calculated from the GPU’s resources and maximum clock. It is useful for describing the class of hardware, but it cannot predict a particular game’s frame rate. Two GPUs with similar theoretical throughput can behave differently because of architecture, drivers, memory behavior and game optimization. ASUS does not present this number as an independent gaming benchmark.

How the integrated GPU renders a game

  1. The game submits work. The CPU prepares draw calls, simulation results and resource-management tasks. The graphics driver translates those requests for the Radeon engine.
  2. Assets move through shared memory. Textures, geometry, shaders and render targets are stored in the system memory pool. Because that memory is shared, heavy CPU activity and large texture allocations can compete with graphics for bandwidth and capacity.
  3. The GPU executes shader and fixed-function work. Its compute units process vertex, pixel and compute shaders while dedicated graphics blocks handle tasks such as rasterization and output.
  4. The frame is presented on the internal panel. The display can accept a 1920×1080 signal and refresh at up to 120 Hz, but the GPU may render at a lower internal resolution or deliver fewer frames depending on the title and settings.

This pipeline is why an integrated GPU can run modern PC games while still requiring sensible settings. The handheld’s compact cooling system and battery make sustained power management as important as the silicon’s theoretical capability.

What the 1080p, 120 Hz screen does—and does not—guarantee

The Ally X’s seven-inch panel provides a sharp 1920×1080 target and supports refresh rates up to 120 Hz. Refresh capability is a display limit, not a performance guarantee: a game must first render enough frames to benefit from a higher refresh rate. A demanding title may need a lower render resolution, reduced settings or an upscaling mode to maintain consistent motion.

Running below native resolution is not automatically a flaw. On a small screen, a well-tuned upscaler can preserve a convincing image while reducing the number of pixels the GPU must shade. The appropriate choice depends on the game, text clarity, image stability and the frame-rate target you prefer.

Radeon features available in Armoury Crate Special Edition

ASUS says Armoury Crate Special Edition supports Radeon features including Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), Radeon Image Sharpening (RIS) and AMD Fluid Motion Frames. They address different parts of the rendering process:

  • RSR is a driver-level spatial upscaling option that can reconstruct a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution game render when the game does not provide its own compatible upscaler.
  • RIS applies sharpening to improve perceived detail after scaling. Too much sharpening can create halos or emphasize compression and shimmering.
  • Fluid Motion Frames generates additional frames between traditionally rendered frames. It can make camera movement appear smoother, but generated frames do not replace the responsiveness or image information of fully rendered frames.

Feature availability and behavior can depend on driver, game and software versions. ASUS’s support for these options is not evidence of a particular frame rate in a named game, so evaluate them with the title, resolution, settings and power mode identified.

What determines actual gaming performance?

Power mode and power source

Handheld performance changes with the selected operating mode and whether the system is plugged in. A higher power allowance can let the GPU sustain more work, while battery operation may favor efficiency and runtime. Compare results only when the power mode, charger state and performance profile are the same.

Resolution and graphics settings

Pixel count has a direct effect on shading work. Lowering internal resolution, shadows, reflections, volumetric effects or texture quality can relieve different bottlenecks. Texture settings also affect memory capacity and bandwidth, which matters on a shared-memory design.

Thermals and sustained loads

A short burst can run faster than a long play session. As heat builds, firmware may reduce clocks to stay within thermal limits. A useful test therefore reports a sustained run rather than quoting a peak overlay reading from the first minute.

Drivers and game updates

Graphics drivers and game patches can change shader compilation, compatibility and performance. When troubleshooting, record the driver version, game build, operating mode and whether the system is using the internal panel or an external display.

Integrated Radeon versus the optional XG Mobile

ROG XG Mobile is an external graphics expansion that ASUS says connects to the Ally X through USB4. ASUS describes the 2025 XG Mobile option as adding up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. That hardware sits outside the handheld and has its own GPU, memory and cooling; it does not turn the built-in Radeon into a discrete card.

Characteristic Ally X integrated Radeon ROG XG Mobile route
Location Inside the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor platform Separate external enclosure
Memory Shared LPDDR5X system memory Dedicated memory on the external GPU
Connection Internal processor and memory interfaces USB4 connection to the handheld
Portability Available whenever the handheld is used Requires carrying, powering and connecting the external unit
Purpose Normal handheld gaming and graphics output Optional higher graphics capability at a desk or other supported setup

Do not include XG Mobile hardware in a comparison of integrated-GPU specifications. If you discuss it, identify the exact external model and connection because those details change the performance and portability trade-off.

Can storage upgrades improve graphics?

ASUS identifies a standard M.2 2280 SSD and says the drive is upgradeable; the overview specifies a PCIe Gen4-compatible storage path. Replacing the SSD can add capacity or change storage performance, but it does not add compute units, graphics memory or GPU power. Storage expansion is useful for installing larger games, not for converting the integrated Radeon into a discrete graphics solution.

  • The exact model: 2025 RC73XA, not the 2024 ROG Ally X.
  • Game version, graphics preset, ray-tracing options and upscaling or frame-generation settings.
  • Render resolution and output resolution.
  • Power profile, charger state and fan or thermal policy.
  • Driver version, operating-system build and test duration.
  • Whether the number is an average, a one-percent-low result, a short peak or a sustained measurement.

Without those details, a single number is not a reliable comparison. The official 8.6-teraflop specification is useful for identifying the hardware, but controlled testing is required to establish playability or ranking against another handheld.

Common points of confusion

“Is the NPU the GPU?”

No. ASUS describes an onboard NPU for AI workloads, while the Radeon graphics engine handles conventional rendering. They are separate blocks with different purposes.

“Does 120 Hz mean games run at 120 frames per second?”

No. The panel can refresh at that rate, but the game and graphics engine must produce frames quickly enough to use it.

“Does more system RAM equal a faster GPU?”

Not automatically. Additional capacity can help avoid memory pressure, but speed depends on bandwidth, workload, power and software. The Ally X’s memory is shared by the CPU and GPU.

“Can an SSD upgrade improve frame rate?”

It can improve storage capacity and, in some cases, loading behavior. It does not upgrade the Radeon graphics hardware.

Bottom line for buyers and owners

The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X uses AMD Radeon integrated graphics based on RDNA 3 inside the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform. ASUS ROG Canada lists 12 compute units, a maximum 2.7 GHz clock and up to 8.6 teraflops; those figures describe the hardware’s theoretical specification, not guaranteed game performance. The design shares system memory and power with the CPU, so practical results depend on the game, settings, resolution, power profile, thermals and drivers.

For handheld use, treat the built-in Radeon as the complete graphics solution. Use the display’s refresh capability and Radeon software features as tuning options, not promises of a fixed frame rate. If you need a separate, more powerful graphics processor, XG Mobile is an external USB4 accessory and should be evaluated as a different setup.
