DLSS 5 currently requires a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU when it runs locally, including RTX 50 Series laptop GPUs. GeForce RTX 40 cards support NVIDIA’s standard DLSS Frame Generation, but are not currently listed for DLSS 5, Multi Frame Generation, or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation. RTX 20 and RTX 30 cards support older DLSS features such as Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction, not the frame-generation features in NVIDIA’s current generation matrix. GeForce NOW Ultimate is a separate cloud route: NVIDIA says members streaming from RTX 5080 systems can use DLSS 5.
DLSS 5 compatibility at a glance
As of October 13, 2026, NVIDIA lists DLSS 5’s 3D-Guided Neural Rendering as an RTX 50 Series feature. That includes desktop graphics cards and laptop GPUs in the RTX 50 generation. The feature is not currently listed for RTX 40, RTX 30, or RTX 20 GPUs. NVIDIA says it is considering RTX 40 support after further performance tuning, but that is a future possibility rather than an available RTX 40 feature today. See NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 FAQ for the current statement.

“DLSS 5” and “DLSS Frame Generation” are not interchangeable names. DLSS 5 is the newer Neural Rendering stage, shown in a supported game as DLSS Neural Rendering. Standard Frame Generation inserts generated frames between traditionally rendered frames. Multi Frame Generation creates multiple generated frames per rendered frame, while Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is NVIDIA’s related RTX 50 feature. A card can support one of these technologies without supporting the others.

Which RTX generation supports each DLSS feature?
GeForce RTX 50 Series: the current local requirement for DLSS 5
Every RTX 50 Series GPU is the hardware class NVIDIA currently identifies for local DLSS 5 support. The same generation-level statement covers RTX 50 Series notebook GPUs, although the exact laptop’s power limit, cooling, and driver package can affect performance. An RTX 50 Series card also supports standard Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA where a game implements those options.
A model such as a GeForce RTX 5070 is therefore a valid example of a local DLSS 5-capable GPU, but the series-wide compatibility statement does not establish that one RTX 50 model is faster, better value, or more suitable than another. NVIDIA has not supplied a universal retail-price or independent performance ranking for the individual RTX 50 models in the compatibility information.
GeForce RTX 40 Series: standard Frame Generation, not DLSS 5 today
RTX 40 cards are listed for standard DLSS Frame Generation. They can generate an additional frame between rendered frames in games that support the feature, alongside Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. They are not currently listed for DLSS 5 Neural Rendering, Multi Frame Generation, or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation.
If you own an RTX 4070, RTX 4080, RTX 4090, or another RTX 40 model, the accurate answer to “Does my card support DLSS 5?” is not currently. The accurate answer to “Does my card support DLSS Frame Generation?” is yes, when the game and driver support standard Frame Generation. NVIDIA’s FAQ says broader RTX 40 DLSS 5 support may be considered after RTX 50 performance tuning; it does not promise a release date or guarantee that every RTX 40 model will receive it.

GeForce RTX 30 and RTX 20 Series: established DLSS features without frame generation
RTX 30 and RTX 20 GPUs remain supported by DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA in NVIDIA’s matrix. Neither generation is listed for standard Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, or DLSS 5. That means an RTX 3060, RTX 3080, RTX 2060, or RTX 2080 can still use DLSS upscaling or reconstruction in compatible games, but those options should not be confused with generated-frame support.
What DLSS 5 actually does
NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. The system takes a game’s frame color data and motion vectors, then adds lighting and material effects through an additional neural-rendering stage. Developers control the intensity, color grading, and masking, so the final appearance is part of the game’s implementation rather than a single universal filter applied identically everywhere.
The DLSS 5 stage can operate with Super Resolution, Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, rasterization, ray tracing, and path tracing. These are separate parts of the rendering pipeline: enabling one does not automatically enable every other DLSS option. A supported game must expose DLSS Neural Rendering, and the game’s developers must integrate the feature before an RTX 50 owner can use it.

NVIDIA reported a fivefold performance gain during DLSS 5 development between its March 2026 announcement and September launch, moving from a dual-RTX-5090 setup to one graphics card. That is NVIDIA’s own development figure, not an independent benchmark or a promise of a five-times frame-rate increase on retail systems. Todd Howard of Bethesda Game Studios described the visual aim this way: “With DLSS 5 the artistic style and detail shine through without being held back by the traditional limits of real-time rendering.” The quote appears in NVIDIA’s March 16, 2026 DLSS 5 announcement.

How standard Frame Generation differs from Multi Frame Generation
Standard DLSS Frame Generation
Standard Frame Generation is listed for RTX 40 and RTX 50 GPUs. It creates generated frames between conventionally rendered frames, using game motion data and NVIDIA’s frame-generation technology. The feature still requires a compatible game and normally works alongside other DLSS settings selected by the developer.
DLSS Multi Frame Generation
Multi Frame Generation is listed for RTX 50 only. Instead of adding just one generated frame between rendered frames, it can create multiple generated frames from the rendered output and motion information. The generation matrix does not list it for RTX 40, RTX 30, or RTX 20 cards.
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is also listed as an RTX 50-only feature. Its presence in NVIDIA’s table does not mean that every game offers a user-selectable dynamic mode; the developer and the game’s current version determine which controls appear. Check the game’s release notes and graphics menu rather than assuming that a card’s hardware support guarantees a particular ratio or setting.

Game support matters as much as GPU support
A compatible GPU is necessary but not sufficient. NVIDIA named NBA 2K27 as the initial DLSS 5 game and stated that the feature became available on September 3, 2026. For that title, NVIDIA instructs players to install GeForce Game Ready Driver 616.64 WHQL, open Video Settings, and select DLSS Neural Rendering. The option can also be toggled during gameplay and replays with F9. These are NBA 2K27-specific directions, not universal steps that every future DLSS 5 game will use. NVIDIA’s launch details are available in its DLSS 5 NBA 2K27 announcement.

- Confirm that the system has an RTX 50 Series desktop GPU or laptop GPU for local DLSS 5.
- Update to the game’s required NVIDIA driver; for NBA 2K27, that is Game Ready Driver 616.64 WHQL.
- Update the game itself so its DLSS 5 integration is present.
- Open the game’s graphics or Video Settings menu and look specifically for DLSS Neural Rendering, not merely “DLSS.”
- Enable the option and adjust any intensity, quality, or masking controls the developer exposes.
- For NBA 2K27, press F9 during gameplay or replays if you need to toggle the setting without returning to the menu.
If the option is missing, the most likely explanations are an unsupported GPU generation, an outdated driver, an outdated game build, or a game that supports another DLSS feature but not DLSS 5. A generic DLSS Super Resolution option does not prove that Neural Rendering is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use DLSS 5 without owning an RTX 50 card?
Yes, through cloud streaming rather than local rendering. NVIDIA lists GeForce NOW Ultimate as a route for members streaming from GeForce RTX 5080 systems, and says DLSS 5 can be used in that configuration. The rendering hardware is in the cloud, so your local PC does not need to contain an RTX 50 GPU. Your experience will still depend on the streamed game’s support, the service’s current availability, and the quality and latency of your internet connection. This is a different use case from installing an RTX 50 card in your own computer.
How to choose between upgrading and keeping your current GPU
| Your situation | What the compatibility data says | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| You need local DLSS 5 now | RTX 50 Series desktop or laptop GPU is the listed hardware class. | Choose an RTX 50 system, then verify the target game’s integration. |
| You already own RTX 40 | Standard Frame Generation is supported; DLSS 5 and Multi Frame Generation are not currently listed. | Keep using standard Frame Generation unless a future NVIDIA announcement adds support you need. |
| You own RTX 20 or RTX 30 | Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA are listed; frame-generation features are not. | Use the supported upscaling and reconstruction options, or consider an upgrade only for a specific game or feature. |
| You do not want a local GPU upgrade | GeForce NOW Ultimate is listed for DLSS 5 streaming from RTX 5080 rigs. | Check the service, game, region, account, and network requirements before relying on cloud play. |
The compatibility table does not establish current retail prices, value, power consumption, laptop performance, or frame-rate differences between individual RTX 50 models. Those decisions require model-specific testing and the requirements of the particular game you intend to play.

- Generation is only the first check: confirm the exact GPU name in Windows, the NVIDIA App, or the system manufacturer’s specifications. A laptop may use a mobile variant with different power limits from a desktop card with a similar name.
- Driver support can be game-specific: a newly released title may require a particular Game Ready Driver even when the GPU generation is eligible.
- The game must expose the feature: DLSS 5 is not a driver-only switch that appears in every game.
- Cloud hardware is not local hardware: streaming from an RTX 5080 rig gives the cloud session that rendering capability; it does not add DLSS 5 support to your own RTX 20, 30, or 40 card.
- Feature names matter: “DLSS,” “Super Resolution,” “Frame Generation,” “Multi Frame Generation,” and “DLSS Neural Rendering” refer to different capabilities.
What may change
NVIDIA’s compatibility information is current to October 13, 2026, and game support can change through patches, drivers, and updated feature integrations. The company’s stated plan to consider RTX 40 support is not a current compatibility promise. Before purchasing hardware or troubleshooting a missing option, recheck NVIDIA’s DLSS developer documentation, the DLSS feature matrix, and the game developer’s latest support notes.
