Find your graphics card in Windows

Task Manager: the fastest answer

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
  2. Open the Performance tab.
  3. Select GPU 0, GPU 1, or another GPU entry in the left column. The model name appears in the pane, along with utilization and memory information.

A computer with both integrated and dedicated graphics can show more than one GPU entry. Check every entry before deciding which adapter is installed.

Settings: a simple model check

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Display > Advanced display.
  3. Read the GPU name in the display-information area.

Windows releases can change menu wording or placement slightly. If the GPU name is not shown there, use Task Manager or Device Manager instead.

Device Manager: adapter, driver, and status details

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Read each listed adapter name. Double-click an entry and inspect its General, Driver, Details, and Events tabs for status, manufacturer, identifiers, driver version, and dates.

Device Manager is the better choice when you need the exact adapter entry or are checking whether Windows reports a problem. The name may be less descriptive than the retail name printed on a graphics card, so preserve the entire string and any hardware identifiers shown under Details.

DirectX Diagnostic Tool: create a support report

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type dxdiag and press Enter. Approve any prompt to check whether drivers are digitally signed if it appears.
  3. Open the Display (or, on some systems, Display 1/Display 2) tab. Read the device name, manufacturer, display memory fields, and driver information.
  4. Select Save All Information to create a text report you can attach to a support request.

The System tab also identifies your Windows edition and DirectX version, which helps support staff interpret the display information. A saved report is more useful than a screenshot when several adapters or driver versions are involved.

If Windows says “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter”

That label means Windows is using a generic display-driver interface rather than exposing the normal vendor model through its standard driver path. It is a troubleshooting branch, not proof of one specific hardware failure.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system
  1. In Device Manager, open Display adapters, right-click Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and choose Properties.
  2. Check the Details tab and select hardware-ID properties to capture the identifiers Windows can see.
  3. Record the computer model (for a laptop or prebuilt desktop) or the graphics-card information from the card manufacturer before selecting a replacement driver.
  4. After installing the correct driver from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer, restart Windows and check Device Manager and Task Manager again.

Official identification guides document the normal Windows paths but do not establish a single diagnosis for every generic-adapter case. If the model remains unclear, use the computer maker’s support documentation and the hardware identifiers rather than guessing from screen resolution or game settings.

Find your graphics processor on a Mac

About: quick identification

  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Choose System Settings > General > About.
  3. Read the Graphics field when it is shown. On Apple-silicon Macs, About identifies the Apple chip that contains the graphics processor.

System Report: the authoritative hardware inventory

  1. From Apple menu > System Settings > General > About, select System Report.
  2. In the sidebar, open the graphics or display section and record the complete controller name, memory information, and display connections.
  3. Save or send the report when Apple Support or a game-support team asks for system details.

System Report contains detailed hardware, network, and software information, so it is the most complete record when the short About panel is ambiguous.

MacBook Pro models with more than one GPU

Some MacBook Pro models include integrated and discrete processors. About This Mac can show the cards currently in use next to Graphics. To see which applications are using the higher-performance processor, open Activity Monitor and select the Energy tab.

Find your graphics card on Linux

Use the PCI device list

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Run:
lspci | grep -Ei 'vga|3d|display'

The command lists PCI devices, while the filter keeps entries containing vga, 3d, or display. The output normally includes the vendor and model string for each display controller. Ubuntu documentation demonstrates lspci identifying an NVIDIA 3D controller.

If the shell reports that lspci is unavailable, install the PCI-utilities package supplied by your distribution (often named pciutils) or open that distribution’s hardware-information panel. Package names and graphical panels vary by Linux distribution, so use its own package manager and documentation.

  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Understand what the result means

Integrated versus discrete graphics

  • Integrated GPU: graphics circuitry built into the processor or system-on-chip. It is common in laptops and many desktops and normally uses system memory.
  • Discrete or dedicated GPU: a separate graphics processor, often with its own video memory and higher power consumption.

Neither label alone tells you how well a game will run. The full model, available memory, driver, game settings, and display resolution all matter.

Vendor name versus model name

Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA are vendors, not complete GPU identities. Record the entire model string, including its series and model number. A vendor-only answer is insufficient when you check game requirements, driver downloads, troubleshooting instructions, or upgrade compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installed GPU versus active renderer

Multiple entries mean the system may contain integrated and discrete graphics. The installed list is not necessarily the processor currently rendering a particular application. Windows can expose several adapters in Task Manager, while supported dual-GPU MacBook Pro models can show the cards currently in use and the applications using the higher-performance processor.

What information should you record?

For a support request, game compatibility check, or upgrade plan, capture the following in one note:

  • The complete GPU name for every adapter shown.
  • Your operating-system edition and version.
  • The display-driver version and date.
  • Dedicated and shared graphics-memory values shown by the operating system.
  • Whether the machine has one adapter or multiple adapters.
  • For Windows, the saved dxdiag report; for macOS, the saved or sent System Report when requested.

Keeping the exact spelling and punctuation from the system avoids confusing a family name with a different model and lets support staff match the correct driver or game requirement.

Pick the right method for your goal

Goal Best method Why
See the model in a few seconds on Windows Task Manager It shows GPU entries directly under Performance.
Check a Windows adapter’s driver and status Device Manager Properties expose status, identifiers, manufacturer, and driver fields.
Send complete Windows details to support dxdiag It can save all information as a shareable report.
Inspect every Mac hardware detail System Report It is the in-depth inventory behind About.
Identify a Linux PCI display controller lspci with the display filter It returns matching VGA, 3D, and display-controller entries.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not treat “Intel,” “AMD,” or “NVIDIA” as the full answer; find the model number.
  • Do not assume GPU 0 is automatically the fastest adapter. Check the names of all GPU entries.
  • Do not infer the installed card from a monitor’s brand, cable type, or screen resolution.
  • Do not install a driver solely because a generic adapter label resembles a particular card. Confirm the computer or card model and hardware identifiers first.
  • Do not confuse dedicated video memory with total graphics memory. Windows may show dedicated and shared values separately.

After identification: check drivers without guessing

Once you have the exact model, compare the installed driver version with the current driver listed by your computer or graphics-card manufacturer. Use the manufacturer’s support page for the appropriate operating system and hardware generation. If a game still uses the wrong adapter on a multi-GPU system, verify the active GPU in Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor’s Energy tab on supported MacBook Pro models before changing settings.

If you want an optional shortcut after identifying the hardware, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, show the current and recommended versions, install official drivers, and provide backup, restore, and scheduled-scan features. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and includes a two-day free trial with no credit card before subscription; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Quick checklist

  1. Open the built-in hardware view for your operating system.
  2. Read every GPU entry, not only the first one.
  3. Write down the full vendor-and-model string.
  4. Record driver, memory, and operating-system details if you need support.
  5. Distinguish installed adapters from the one currently rendering an application.

These steps identify the graphics processor accurately on Windows, macOS, and Linux without buying hardware or relying on a third-party diagnostic utility.
