PlayStation’s official FAQ calls Grand Theft Auto VI “a single-player experience,” and Take-Two uses the same description in its release announcement. Rockstar has not published details of a GTA 6 online mode, co-op campaign, friend sessions, private lobbies or cross-play.
A Twitch executive was reported by PC Gamer as saying multiplayer would launch in 2027, but that is a third-party statement, not a Rockstar announcement or a dependable launch commitment. Treat every online feature and date as unconfirmed until Rockstar provides platform and service details.

What the official pages actually confirm
The clearest answer comes from the product information rather than speculation. PlayStation’s Canada product page asks whether the game has multiplayer modes or features and answers: “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.” You can read that wording on the official PlayStation FAQ and product page.
Take-Two Interactive’s June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement likewise says that Grand Theft Auto VI “features a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” Its announcement gives launch and pricing information, but it does not describe an online component. The Take-Two announcement is the publisher’s source for those details.

Rockstar’s GTA VI game page introduces Jason and Lucia, who are forced to rely on each other while caught in a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. That is a description of the story. Two protagonists do not establish that two people can control them cooperatively, either online or on one console.
So the responsible interpretation is narrow: the announced product is presented as a single-player game, while the reviewed official material does not confirm how friends will play together, whether they will play together at all, or when any separate multiplayer service might arrive.
“Multiplayer” can mean several different things
Players asking for “GTA 6 online” may be asking about very different experiences. None of the following has been confirmed in the official material reviewed:

This distinction matters because an online announcement could answer one question while leaving the others open. A service might support public free roam but not campaign co-op; it might allow private sessions but restrict cross-play; or it might launch later as a separate product. Until Rockstar explains the design, “GTA 6 has multiplayer” would be too imprecise to guide a purchase or a group plan.
Launch platforms, date and purchase details
Take-Two says GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The US launch price stated in that June 24 announcement is $79.99. Those figures and terms can change by region or retailer, so use local listings for the amount you will actually pay.

PlayStation also lists a pre-order offer for one month of GTA+, subject to eligibility and dates. That promotion is not evidence that GTA 6 includes online play, and it should not be treated as a multiplayer entitlement.
What the reported 2027 timing does—and does not—tell you
On September 17, 2026, PC Gamer reported comments from Twitch CEO Dan Clancy. The report quotes Clancy saying: “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.” Read the full report at PC Gamer.

The same report notes that Rockstar had not officially announced GTA 6 multiplayer or its timing. It therefore cannot establish a 2027 release date, a launch window, a beta, or a particular feature set.
There are practical reasons to keep the distinction clear. A company executive outside the game’s publisher may be discussing platform traffic, an industry expectation or information that has not been formally released. Even if the year eventually proves correct, it says nothing about story co-op, lobby size, cross-play, progression, pricing or whether the service will be available on day one. Until Rockstar publishes those details, do not promise your friends that buying the November 2026 game will give them an online mode immediately.
How to plan a group purchase without making assumptions
- Confirm each person’s hardware. The announced versions are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PS4 is not supported according to PlayStation’s product page. If someone owns neither supported console, buying hardware is a separate decision from buying GTA 6 and does not guarantee access to future multiplayer features.
- Separate the story purchase from an online promise. Make a group plan on the basis that the announced game is single-player. Do not split a digital purchase or buy multiple copies solely because you expect a launch-day co-op mode.
- Record everyone’s platform. If an online mode is announced later, platform ownership will be one of the first compatibility questions. Having friends on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S does not itself prove cross-play.
- Watch Rockstar’s own service details. Look for an announcement that names supported platforms, release timing, account requirements, modes and whether a separate purchase or subscription is needed. A retailer listing or a social-media rumor cannot substitute for those specifications.
- Recheck regional terms before ordering. The $79.99 figure is the US price stated by Take-Two, while release, taxes, editions and promotions vary by market. The physical version’s download code also makes the platform and region printed on the package important.
This approach lets a group enjoy the confirmed single-player release without turning an unverified feature into a financial commitment.

Questions a real online announcement would need to answer
If Rockstar announces multiplayer, friends should look for concrete answers rather than a headline that simply says “online.” The useful checklist is:

- Release timing: Is multiplayer available on November 19, 2026, or does it arrive in a later update or separate launch?
- Modes: Is there a persistent open world, short co-op missions, competitive activities, or only limited social features?
- Party size: How many players can join one session, and does the number differ between activities?
- Private play: Can a group create invite-only sessions, and can it prevent public matchmaking?
- Cross-play: Can PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players share a session? If so, is cross-progression also supported?
- Campaign relationship: Is Jason and Lucia’s story still strictly single-player, or is a separate cooperative campaign provided?
- Accounts and subscriptions: Which platform accounts, age settings, internet connection and console subscriptions are required?
- Ownership: Does the standard game include the service, or is an additional edition, subscription or purchase required?
- Existing GTA Online: Are characters, currency, friends lists or progression carried over, kept separate or unsupported?
- Support window: What launch regions, server policies and update schedule will apply?
Until those questions are answered by the publisher or developer, none of the feature names should be treated as a commitment.

Jason and Lucia’s partnership is easy to mistake for a co-op system because the story follows two central characters. Rockstar’s description says they rely on each other in a conspiracy spanning Leonida; it does not say that one player controls Jason while another controls Lucia. A scripted partnership, character switching or alternating missions can all remain single-player designs.
That means a friend cannot currently be promised a shared campaign, split-screen play, an invite to take over Lucia, or a drop-in session. Those possibilities would require an explicit mode description, control rules and platform support that have not been published.
How this relates to the existing GTA Online
The announced GTA 6 information does not explain whether a future online service will connect to the existing GTA Online, replace it or operate alongside it. Buying GTA 6 should therefore not be described as buying continued access to an existing online profile, currency balance, character or friends list.

Treat any account, subscription and transfer rules as unanswered until an official announcement supplies them.
Practical answers to common friend-play scenarios
“We all have PS5s. Can we play together at launch?”
The hardware is supported, but a multiplayer feature is not confirmed. The only official product description reviewed calls the game single-player, so there is no verified launch-day session to schedule.
“Some of us are on Xbox and some on PlayStation. Will cross-play work?”
Not known. Both console families are listed as launch platforms, but that is not evidence of cross-play. Wait for Rockstar to name cross-platform support.
“Can I buy the game now and get GTA Online later?”
There is no official statement that a GTA 6 online service will be included, free, paid, linked to GTA Online or released at all. The reported 2027 comment is not a purchase guarantee.

“Does the physical box include online access?”
Take-Two says the physical box contains a download code. That describes the delivery format, not an online entitlement; check the edition’s final regional terms.
Bottom line for friends deciding whether to buy
Buy GTA 6 for its announced single-player experience, not for an online feature that has yet to be specified. A 2027 multiplayer launch has been reported as a Twitch CEO’s statement, but Rockstar has not confirmed it. Until an official announcement covers modes, timing, platforms, cross-play and ownership, the honest answer to “Can we play GTA 6 together?” is: not confirmed.
