What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no official, universal amount of free storage that every console owner must reserve for a large game. Check the current storage requirement for the specific title and platform, compare it with the free capacity on the drive that will receive the installation, and leave some additional working room if you want to install updates or add-ons without deleting another game first. That extra room is practical planning advice, not a Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft requirement.
Do not rely on rules such as “keep 20% free,” “reserve 30%,” or “always leave twice the download size.” The official guidance reviewed for PlayStation and Nintendo does not establish any of those formulas, and a title-specific launch-era example cannot be generalized to every current game.

What the listed game size actually tells you
A store listing or game box gives you the best starting point, but the number can describe different things depending on the platform and title. A download package, the installed game, a patch, downloadable content and temporary installation files are not necessarily the same size.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Download size: the data your console must obtain from the network. Compression, language choices and regional versions can affect it.
- Installed footprint: the space occupied after the console unpacks and installs the game. It can differ from the download figure.
- Update or DLC space: later patches, expansions and optional language or texture packs may require additional capacity.
- Installation working space: the console may need temporary room while it verifies, unpacks or replaces files. No single cross-platform formula establishes how much that room will be.
Because those figures vary, treat the current listing as a starting point rather than a promise that the same amount will cover every future update. Recheck the title’s listing when you install or update it.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
A reliable way to calculate your immediate need
- Identify the exact game and edition. Standard, deluxe, cross-generation and bundled editions can contain different content. Check the current digital store page or the publisher’s current listing for your platform.
- Note the stated storage requirement. Record whether the figure is described as required storage, download size or another measure. Do not silently treat one label as another.
- Check the destination device. Look at free capacity on the internal drive or expansion device that will receive the game. If your console has more than one supported storage location, confirm which one is selected.
- Account for content you intend to install now. Include the base game, season pass downloads, texture packs, language packs and any day-one update that the console presents.
- Add a modest planning cushion. If you regularly keep several large games installed or want to accept updates immediately, leaving extra room reduces the chance that you must delete something during installation. The size of that cushion is your usage choice, not an official universal percentage.
- Install, then verify. After installation, return to the console’s storage screen. The remaining capacity is more useful than an estimate made from a store page alone.
For example, if a listing says a game needs 110 GB and your console shows 125 GB free, the installation may fit, but the margin is narrow for an update or optional content. A larger margin is more comfortable; there is no official rule that converts 110 GB into a required 132 GB, 137.5 GB or 165 GB.
Why a console can report “not enough space” when the numbers seem to fit
The game and update are being installed together
A patch can be large even when the original download was smaller. Some updates replace substantial archives rather than adding only the changed files. The console’s requirement at the moment you install is the one that matters.
Temporary installation files need room
Installation may require workspace for verification, unpacking or file replacement. The reviewed official guidance does not give one multiplier that applies to all consoles or games, so do not assume that a fixed multiple of the download size is required.

Reserved system capacity is not available to games
Usable capacity is lower than the number printed on a drive or console box. System software and other reserved data occupy part of it.
Several downloads are queued
Another game, update, capture or add-on may be consuming capacity at the same time. Pause or cancel unneeded downloads, then check the storage screen again.
PlayStation 5: internal storage, USB and M.2 choices
Sony’s PS5 guidance places the free-space figure at Settings > Storage. Use that screen to see the available capacity and review what is occupying it. If more than one supported storage device is attached, verify the selected installation location before starting a large download.

- Console storage: PS5 games can be installed and played here.
- Compatible M.2 SSD: PS5 games can be stored and played when the drive meets Sony’s compatibility requirements.
- USB extended storage: PS5 games can be stored there, but a PS5 game must be moved back to console storage or compatible M.2 storage before you can play it. USB extended storage is therefore useful for archiving and transfers, not for directly running PS5 games.
This distinction matters when choosing a device. A USB drive can free internal capacity without making every stored PS5 title immediately playable. Moving a game back takes time, so keep frequently played titles on console or M.2 storage if that is practical.

Freeing space without removing everything
Some PS5 games provide a Customize option that lets you remove portions such as unused add-ons or content you have completed. Availability depends on the game. This can be more targeted than deleting the entire installation.
Deleted games and applications remain available for redownload from your PlayStation library. Deleting an application is not the same as managing saved data, however; use the appropriate saved-data controls if you need to preserve or remove saves.
PlayStation 4: a different expansion path
Sony’s PS4 storage advice focuses on three practical options: delete applications you no longer need, install a new game to USB extended storage, or upgrade the console’s internal hard disk drive. Do not apply PS5’s M.2 rules to PS4. The platforms have different supported hardware and storage behavior.
Recommended Free Tools
Before buying a drive, confirm that it is supported by your PS4 model and that you understand whether you are expanding storage externally or replacing the internal drive. As with PS5, check the current game requirement and the free capacity shown by the console rather than relying on a percentage.

Nintendo Switch: microSD capacity, physical cards and saves
Nintendo says Switch microSD cards can store downloaded software, updates, downloadable content and screenshots. Storage needs vary substantially by game, so choose capacity according to the number and type of games you expect to keep and the amount of downloadable content you plan to retain.
Check before buying or downloading
For a digital purchase, the Nintendo eShop shows the required storage before purchase. Some physical releases also require additional microSD storage because the full game is delivered as a download rather than entirely on the cartridge. Check the packaging and the current store information instead of assuming that “physical” means no download is needed.
What happens to saves when you archive
Nintendo’s data-management guidance distinguishes software from save data. Archiving downloaded software frees space while retaining its icon on the HOME Menu, allowing you to download the software again later. Nintendo says save data is unaffected by archiving or deleting downloaded software. Save data is stored in System Memory and is not saved or copied to the microSD card.
That means a microSD card is for software and media capacity, not a direct save-data backup location. Use the Switch’s own save-data management and any supported cloud features separately.

Nintendo Switch 2: 256 GB system storage and microSD Express
Nintendo’s current Switch 2 Data Management FAQ, accessed in 2026, lists the console at 256 GB and notes that a portion is reserved for system use. The figure is total console capacity, not a promise that 256 GB is available for games.
Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for software data, updates, downloadable content and captures. External USB hard drives are not supported for this purpose. A microSD Express card is an optional capacity expansion: Nintendo’s current FAQ says that, at the time of that guidance, no individual games required additional storage. Do not buy a card on the assumption that every owner needs one; buy it if your library or capture collection exceeds the usable internal capacity.
Xbox: use the console’s current figures, not an invented percentage
The available Xbox storage-support search result did not provide readable, platform-specific instructions. Consequently, there is no supported basis here for quoting an Xbox free-space percentage, an installation multiplier, a menu path or a particular expansion-device compatibility claim.
For Xbox, check the current game listing and the storage screen on your own console. If an installation fails, confirm the destination drive, remove or move unneeded games, and check whether an update or add-on is queued. For exact expansion behavior, use a current readable Xbox support page for your console generation before purchasing hardware.
When to delete, archive or expand storage
Delete or archive when you need space now
- On PlayStation, delete games or applications you are not currently using; purchased games can be downloaded again from your library.
- On Switch, archive downloaded software to free its space while keeping the HOME Menu icon. The save data remains unaffected according to Nintendo’s guidance.
- Remove optional add-ons or completed content when a game’s own Customize option supports it.
Expand when your library is consistently full
Expansion makes sense when you repeatedly delete games just to install routine updates, keep a large digital library available, or store many captures. Match the device category to the console: PS5 may use a compatible M.2 SSD or USB extended storage with the play limitation described above; PS4 can use USB extended storage or an HDD upgrade; Switch uses microSD; Switch 2 uses microSD Express.
Do not buy an accessory before checking compatibility
Storage categories are not interchangeable across generations. Confirm the console model, supported interface, capacity limits and whether games can run directly from the device. A drive that stores games may still require moving them back before play.
A practical troubleshooting checklist
- Open the console’s storage-management screen and record free space on the intended destination.
- Open the game’s current store or publisher listing and check the stated requirement for your edition and platform.
- Check queued updates, DLC, language packs and captures.
- Confirm that the installation location has enough capacity, not merely that another attached device does.
- Archive, delete or move an infrequently played title if the margin is too small.
- Retry the installation and recheck free space after it completes.
- If the error persists despite adequate capacity, consult the current platform support instructions for that exact console model rather than applying a universal percentage or multiplier.
The simplest rule to remember
Leave enough free space for the game’s current requirement on the device that will install it, plus a cushion that fits your update and DLC habits. The cushion is a convenience choice. No official source reviewed establishes a universal percentage, fixed number of gigabytes or “twice the download” rule for large console games.
