What the setting reveals is how Rockstar draws on South Florida’s recognizable coastal scenery, architecture, and regional contrasts, then reshapes them into a game world. The real Miami is more geographically complex, architecturally varied, culturally diverse, and exposed to environmental risks than a sunny beachside image can convey.
Is Vice City supposed to be Miami?
Vice City is a fictional counterpart to Miami, not a documentary recreation of the real city. Rockstar’s official game page calls the setting “Vice City, USA,” while its Trailer 2 announcement describes a criminal conspiracy “stretching across the state of Leonida” and invites players to “Explore Vice City and beyond.” Those names establish a fictional city and state; they do not confirm that every in-game neighborhood or landmark maps directly to a real place. Rockstar’s official GTA VI page and Trailer 2 announcement are the clearest guides to what the studio has actually named.

The distinction matters because “Miami” can refer to more than one geography. The City of Miami is a municipality within Miami-Dade County, and the wider South Florida region extends beyond both. A fictional city can borrow impressions from across that broader landscape without being a literal copy of the municipality.

A reference to Miami may mean the municipal city, parts of the county, or a broader South Florida landscape in the popular imagination. Rockstar’s wording points to a fictional setting that includes Vice City and places beyond it, rather than a promise to reproduce the boundaries or street plan of the City of Miami. In other words, a resemblance to a real-world place does not settle the question of where a fictional neighborhood would sit on a real map.

For players, that freedom is part of the premise: a fictional setting can combine recognizable cues and move between them in ways that serve the game. For readers comparing it with Miami, it is also a useful limit. Official naming tells us what Rockstar calls its world; it does not make every visual parallel a confirmed real-world location.
What parts of Miami are in GTA 6?
There is no official, complete map matching Vice City locations to real Miami locations. Trailer comparisons are interpretations of visible imagery, not confirmations from Rockstar. For example, Axios identified South Beach Art Deco hotels near Lummus Park in the first trailer’s opening scene and consulted Daniel Ciraldo, executive director of the Miami Design Preservation League. Ciraldo said, “I must say the depictions are pretty exciting, it looks like they took the best of South Florida from the Everglades to South Beach and everything in between,” Axios reported.
That reading points to a useful way to understand the setting: recognize the visual references, but avoid treating a screenshot as proof of a one-to-one location. A hotel façade may evoke South Beach without establishing that the game reproduces a specific building, street plan, or neighborhood. The same caution applies to wider regional scenery. The trailer imagery can suggest a range from urban coastline to wetlands, while the official description only confirms Vice City and the larger fictional state of Leonida.

There are two different claims that are often blurred together: that an image resembles a real place, and that the image depicts that exact place. Axios’s reading of the opening scene supports the first kind of claim. Its identification of South Beach Art Deco hotels near Lummus Park is a journalistic interpretation of the trailer, with a local preservation expert’s reaction. It is not an official Rockstar location label or a confirmation that a particular hotel has been copied.
The same standard helps with any trailer comparison. Architecture, coastline, and landscape can offer clues to the influences behind a fictional environment. But a still image does not establish the exact street, neighborhood boundary, or real-world route represented. Treating Vice City as an impression of South Florida leaves room for those recognizable references without mistaking them for a complete map.

Why Miami’s architecture is more than Art Deco
Art Deco is among South Beach’s most recognizable visual signatures, and it is a natural reference point for a fictional coastal city. The City of Miami’s Historic Preservation Division dates its Art Deco examples to 1929–1940 and describes tropical and nautical motifs: palms, flamingos, pelicans, the moon, and ocean themes. The style makes a city feel both urban and resort-like, which is one reason its imagery reads so quickly on screen. The City of Miami’s historic architecture guide documents that local context.
Those details matter because Art Deco is not simply a generic pastel look. The city’s examples use motifs drawn from the tropical and maritime surroundings, giving a building style a specifically South Florida visual vocabulary. A game can use such a vocabulary to establish a coastal atmosphere quickly. But a recognizable visual shorthand is still only one part of the region’s built environment.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMiami’s architectural identity is not frozen in a single decade, nor does every part of the city look like an Art Deco postcard. The City of Miami’s preservation guide also identifies Mediterranean Revival, Craftsman, Bahamian or Conch, and Miami Modern architecture. Bahamian or Conch homes are especially associated with Overtown and Coconut Grove. Miami Modern, often called MiMo, dates from 1945–1965. Miami-Dade County’s architectural history traces the region through Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, and MiMo, and notes practical adaptations to the climate, including jalousie windows that help catch cross-breezes. The county’s architectural history shows why the region’s visual character cannot be reduced to pastel hotels and oceanfront towers.
The range of styles also gives a more precise answer to what a Miami-inspired game environment might draw upon. Art Deco offers a conspicuous public-facing image; Mediterranean Revival, Craftsman, Bahamian or Conch, and MiMo point to other histories and building traditions. These names are not interchangeable labels for a single look. They represent distinct architectural examples and periods identified by the city and county sources.
Climate adaptation is another way architecture connects the region to its setting. Miami-Dade County’s history notes jalousie windows as a practical design feature for catching cross-breezes. That detail offers a reminder that local architecture is not only about façades that look distinctive in a trailer; it also reflects responses to the climate. The sources support that regional context, though they do not establish that any particular game building reproduces one of these features.

For a game, selecting a few legible styles is an efficient way to establish place. In real Miami, however, architectural identity is layered across neighborhoods and periods. A convincing South Florida impression can draw on a recognizable Art Deco street, then shift into other building traditions without implying that those styles are interchangeable or found everywhere in equal measure.
How big is the real Miami behind the fictional city?
The City of Miami’s 2024 report lists approximately 467,171 residents across 35.87 square miles, with 57.7 percent of residents foreign born. The report attributes the population figure to the University of Florida Bureau of Economic and Business Research. These are City of Miami figures—not Miami-Dade County totals—and should not be used as a headcount for the wider region. The City of Miami’s report and city profile provide the municipality-level context.
Keeping the geography attached to those figures is essential. The City of Miami is one municipality; Miami-Dade County is a larger jurisdiction, and “South Florida” can refer to a still broader region. A population number for the municipal city cannot stand in for all of those places. Nor can a fictional city’s scale, as presented in a game, be read as a demographic estimate of its real-world inspiration.
The 2024 report’s foreign-born share adds another dimension to the comparison, but it should be read narrowly and accurately: 57.7 percent of residents were foreign born according to that city report. It is one measure of the population, not a complete account of Miami’s cultures or of any resident’s identity. The figure makes clear that the city is not adequately represented by a single visual stereotype, but it does not authorize reducing a diverse population to one trait.
Those numbers also underline why a fictional counterpart is necessarily selective. A game environment can compress geography and present a sequence of recognizable places, but real Miami’s scale includes dense urban neighborhoods, varied communities, and connections to a much larger county and region. Likewise, one municipal population figure does not describe the population of all the places people casually mean when they say “Miami.”

What the sunny image leaves out: storms and flooding
Miami’s coastal setting is not only a source of beaches and scenic views. The City of Miami identifies hurricanes, storm surge, and flooding as longstanding vulnerabilities, and says climate change is a factor shaping the city’s future. The city’s climate information frames these as real concerns in planning for Miami.
This is a meaningful contrast with the postcard version of South Florida. Sunlight and water may make a setting instantly recognizable, but they also describe a place where weather and flooding risks are part of civic life. A coastal image can therefore carry two meanings at once: it signals the appeal of the landscape and points toward exposure to hazards the city has long had to consider.
The city’s overview supports that qualitative point; it does not, by itself, establish a particular flood probability, sea-level projection, or forecast for a specific neighborhood. Those figures require separate, specific evidence. Avoiding unsupported precision is important here: a general statement that Miami faces storm and flood vulnerabilities should not be turned into a claim about how often a particular street floods or what will happen by a particular year.

Vice City is best read as a designed impression of South Florida: familiar coastal forms, architecture that signals the region, and a broader fictional landscape beyond the city. That can make the setting evocative without making it geographically exact. Rockstar’s materials establish the fictional names; trailer landmark identifications and expert reactions offer informed readings of particular images, not an official atlas.

Art Deco is a genuine part of Miami’s architectural identity, but so are other styles and neighborhood histories. The City of Miami is only one municipality within Miami-Dade County, and the city’s coastal appeal coexists with documented storm and flood vulnerabilities. Keeping those distinctions in view makes the resemblance more interesting: the game can capture the feel of a region precisely because it is free to condense and dramatize it.

That is the most useful answer to the question of what Vice City reveals about Miami. It reveals the strength of South Florida’s visual associations—coastal urbanism, Art Deco and other architectural traditions, and a wider landscape beyond the city—while also showing why those associations cannot substitute for the place itself. The real city is specific in its geography, varied in its built environment, and shaped by both its population and its environmental conditions. The fictional version can evoke those elements, but it remains a constructed setting rather than a factual guide to Miami.
When a trailer image seems familiar, the most careful reading is therefore neither to dismiss the resemblance nor to overstate it. Ask what the image evokes, whether an outlet or local expert has offered an interpretation, and what Rockstar has actually confirmed. That distinction preserves the pleasure of spotting a reference while keeping the comparison grounded in what the available evidence can support.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Vice City based on?
Vice City is a fictional counterpart that draws on recognizable South Florida and Miami visual cues. Rockstar places it in the fictional state of Leonida; the official materials do not describe it as a literal copy of Miami.

Is Vice City supposed to be Miami?
It is a fictional city associated with Miami, not Miami under its real name. Rockstar calls the setting “Vice City, USA” and names Leonida as the state, so a resemblance does not confirm a one-to-one map.
What parts of Miami are in GTA 6?
No complete official map matches Vice City locations to real Miami. Axios interpreted the first trailer’s opening imagery as South Beach Art Deco hotels near Lummus Park, but that is reporting and analysis, not a Rockstar confirmation of specific buildings or streets.
What is the difference between the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County?
The City of Miami is a municipality within the much larger Miami-Dade County. The City of Miami’s 2024 figures—approximately 467,171 residents and 35.87 square miles—describe the city, not the county or all of South Florida.
Is Miami’s architecture all Art Deco?
No. The City of Miami identifies Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, Craftsman, Bahamian or Conch, and Miami Modern examples. The city dates its Art Deco examples to 1929–1940 and MiMo to 1945–1965.
The Bottom Line
Vice City evokes Miami and the wider South Florida region, but it is not a literal map. The real city’s architecture, geography, population, and exposure to storms and flooding are more varied than any single beachside image can show.
