August 28 has two documented Pokémon X and Y connections, in different years: Nintendo announced the 2DS on August 28, 2013, and a European distribution of Poké Ball Pattern Vivillon began on August 28, 2014. The date alone does not identify which event the original headline meant.

August 28, 2013: Nintendo announced the 2DS

On August 28, 2013, GameSpot reported Nintendo’s announcement of the 2DS, a handheld that played Nintendo 3DS games and was backward compatible with Nintendo DS titles. Nintendo planned to launch it in the United States and Europe on October 12, alongside Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. GameSpot reported a historical launch price of $130; that is not a current price. GameSpot’s August 28, 2013 report also described black models with either blue or red trim.

The connection for fans was hardware: the 2DS offered another way to play the new 3DS games. Nintendo marketing executive Scott Moffitt told GameSpot, “We just wanted to continue growing the installed base and needed to find a way to get to a price point that was more accessible for a broad swath of consumers.”

August 28, 2014: a European Vivillon distribution began

A year later, August 28 marked a different Pokémon X and Y event. Nintendo Everything reported that a European distribution of the Poké Ball Pattern Vivillon was live, with the event window scheduled to end September 9. Nintendo Everything’s August 28, 2014 report covers the announcement. This was a limited-time distribution from 2014, not an active giveaway today.
