What was the “Call of Duty 2025” report?
In December 2023, Insider Gaming reported that the then-unnamed Call of Duty project expected in 2025 was understood to be a direct sequel to Black Ops II, with a setting around 2030. The report characterized development as early and said details were in flux, so its description was a snapshot of a project in progress—not confirmation of the final game’s title, plot, or setting. “Semi-futuristic” appeared in the report’s headline; it should not be treated as an official label for the eventual game. Activision’s later announcement identifies that game as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and places its story in 2035.
What happened to Call of Duty 2025?
Activision officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 on June 8, 2025, identifying it as the 2025 game. Its announcement says the story follows events in Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6, and takes place in 2035. That makes it the official outcome associated with the earlier “Call of Duty 2025” label, while the report’s specific 2030 setting and direct-sequel description remain unverified as descriptions of the final game. Is Black Ops 7 a sequel to Black Ops 2?
Activision says Black Ops 7 follows events in both Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6. That supports a story connection to Black Ops 2, but the official announcement does not describe Black Ops 7 as a direct sequel. That stronger wording belongs to the 2023 report about the unnamed project.
Black Ops II itself spans more than one period. Activision’s 2012 materials describe a future conflict in 2025 involving advanced weaponry, robotics, and drone warfare.
