D&D Beyond’s Unreal Engine 5-powered 3D virtual tabletop is in a sunset period: development ended on October 24, 2025, and its servers are scheduled to shut down at the end of October 2026.
That makes Sigil an interesting short-term experiment for players who want to experience its 3D worlds, animated effects and miniature tools—but a poor foundation for a new long-running campaign.

What was Sigil?
Sigil was designed as a 3D alternative to traditional virtual tabletops. Instead of placing tokens on a largely flat browser map, players entered shared Unreal Engine 5 environments with three-dimensional scenery, digital miniatures, animated spell effects and tools for building worlds.

It was built around the D&D Beyond ecosystem. A D&D Beyond account was required to access the base experience, but the available official material does not support the idea that every purchased book, character, monster or homebrew asset automatically imported into Sigil. The safer description is that Sigil was intended to work alongside D&D Beyond’s digital tools and subscription system.

The product was more ambitious than a simple map-and-token tool. That ambition also created trade-offs: a more demanding desktop experience, more complicated preparation and less flexibility for groups using older or low-powered devices.
D&D Beyond’s official Sigil page describes the product and its feature tiers.
When did Sigil launch?
Sigil followed an earlier preview and testing period before becoming publicly available in 2025. In its February 27, 2025 overview, D&D Beyond presented Sigil as an available 3D virtual tabletop and distinguished it from the separate Maps product.
That launch history matters because older articles may still describe Sigil as “now open” without mentioning what happened afterward. Wizards of the Coast announced on October 24, 2025 that development had ended. Sigil remains temporarily accessible, but it is not being developed as a permanent platform.
What could users do for free?
Anyone with a D&D Beyond account could download and play the base experience. The free tier included:
Rank #2
- Embrace Your Inner Hero: Defend Waterdeep and Undermountain from four legendary D&D monsters—Beholder, Displacer Beast, Mimic, and Red Dragon. Team up to protect citizens and outwit these iconic foes.
- Engaging Cooperative Gameplay: Unite family and friends in a thrilling strategy adventure that boosts critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork.
- Visually Stunning Components: Featuring a richly illustrated game board, sculpted monster miniatures, hero markers, and a custom d20 for immersive D&D flair.
- Easy to Learn, Endless Variety: Each monster offers unique tactics and challenges, delivering fresh strategies and replayable excitement in every 60-minute session.
- Game Night Ready: For 1–5 players. Includes 1 game board, 4 monster mats and figures, hero badges, citizen standees, dice, cards, and all tokens needed to begin your quest.
- Single-player mode.
- The ability to join multiplayer rooms.
- A premade introductory adventure.
- A starter builder kit.
- Limited miniature and map-building content.
The important limitation was hosting. Free access did not provide the complete campaign-running experience, so “free to play” should not be read as “free to host a full multiplayer campaign.”
What did Master Tier unlock?
D&D Beyond’s Master Tier was required to create and host multiplayer rooms. It also expanded Sigil’s building and customisation tools, including:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

- Sharing and loading maps.
- Editing the introductory adventure.
- Saving more maps in Creative Mode.
- Additional painted and unpainted miniatures.
- More builder kits.
- Additional miniature outfits and related creation tools.
The official comparison listed support for hosting up to 15 multiplayer rooms. That is a room limit, not a claim that an individual session supported 15 players.
The official subscription page showed Master Tier from $4.58 USD per month when the cited information was retrieved, before applicable taxes and with automatic-renewal terms. Treat that as a dated price signal rather than a guaranteed current price; regional rates, taxes and plan terms can change. Because Sigil is scheduled to shut down, subscribing solely for a long-term campaign is difficult to justify.

The two products were easy to confuse, but they served different purposes.

What did Unreal Engine 5 add?
The practical benefit of Unreal Engine 5 was immersion rather than a guarantee of technical superiority in every category. Sigil could present:
- Three-dimensional environments instead of flat maps.
- Lighting and atmospheric scenery.
- Animated combat and spell effects.
- Customisable 3D player miniatures.
- A shared space that felt closer to a digital role-playing game than a conventional VTT.
The cost was a higher barrier to entry. A 3D client generally demands more from a computer than a lightweight browser tabletop, and 3D world-building can take more preparation than placing tokens on a map. The supplied official material does not establish a reliable minimum or recommended hardware table, so figures such as specific GTX or RTX models should not be treated as verified requirements.

Why did development end?
In its October 24, 2025 announcement, Wizards of the Coast said it could not sustain the level of ongoing development support that Sigil and its community required. That is the official explanation.
The announcement does not provide a complete technical postmortem or detailed financial account. Claims about user numbers, performance, internal decisions or monetisation should therefore be treated as speculation or outside analysis, not established reasons for the cancellation.
Eligible users who accessed Sigil during the stated March 1–October 23, 2025 period were offered six months of Master Tier credit. The same announcement later covered additional digital rewards, including a character-sheet background for registered users and a digital dice reward for qualifying preorder customers.
When will Sigil shut down?
D&D Beyond says Sigil will remain available through the end of October 2026. After the servers go offline, content created within Sigil will no longer be accessible.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That creates several practical risks:
- A campaign started now has a fixed service deadline.
- Custom maps, scenes and miniatures may not remain available after shutdown.
- There is no stated promise of automatic migration to Maps or another VTT.
- Players should not assume that D&D Beyond content or Sigil projects can be exported in full.
If you already use Sigil, preserve important work while access remains. Save campaign notes and character information elsewhere, capture screenshots or recordings of custom scenes and miniatures, and verify any available export options instead of relying on an unconfirmed migration path.

Is Sigil still worth trying?
It can be worth trying as a temporary experience, but it is not a responsible long-term platform recommendation in September 2026.
Sigil may make sense if your group:
- Wants to see its 3D presentation before the service closes.
- Is running a one-shot, short campaign or technical experiment.
- Already has suitable hardware and Master Tier access.
- Accepts that the service has a fixed end date.
It is a poor choice if your group:
- Needs a campaign platform that will remain available beyond October 2026.
- Plans to invest heavily in custom maps or assets.
- Includes players on older computers or devices.
- Needs browser, tablet or phone flexibility.
- Requires guaranteed archival access to campaign data.
- Does not want hosting tied to a subscription.
- Values mature automation, extensions and long-term community support.
Alternatives to Sigil
D&D Beyond Maps
Maps is the natural alternative for groups already invested in D&D Beyond. It is a 2D VTT with a lighter, more tactical focus, and D&D Beyond says it will continue to be developed and supported after Sigil’s shutdown. The official July 2025 direction announcement also said registered users would be able to run games on Maps without a subscription for the core experience beginning September 16, 2025.
See D&D Beyond’s Maps direction announcement.
Roll20
Roll20 is a strong choice for browser access, easy invitations and a large established VTT ecosystem. It is less suitable if the main attraction is a fully 3D Unreal-style environment. Check its current plan details directly rather than relying on old pricing.
Foundry Virtual Tabletop
Foundry Virtual Tabletop suits technically confident groups that want extensive modules, customisation and more control over their campaign environment. The trade-off is greater responsibility for setup, hosting, updates and administration.
Fantasy Grounds
Fantasy Grounds is aimed at groups that value rules-focused automation and licensed game-system support. Its desktop-oriented model can involve more onboarding friction than a simple browser VTT.
Owlbear Rodeo
Owlbear Rodeo is a lightweight browser option for maps and tokens with minimal setup. It does not attempt Sigil’s 3D presentation or miniature-building ambitions, but that simplicity can be an advantage for groups that prioritise quick access.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing joining with hosting: Free users could join multiplayer rooms, while creating and hosting rooms required Master Tier.
- Trusting launch coverage as current advice: Articles written in 2025 may omit the shutdown announcement.
- Starting a campaign without noticing the deadline: Sigil is not suitable for a campaign expected to continue past October 2026.
- Assuming automatic migration: D&D Beyond has not promised that Sigil creations will transfer to Maps or another VTT.
- Assuming full D&D Beyond import: Integration should not be interpreted as automatic transfer of every purchased or homebrew asset.
- Using unverified hardware numbers: Exact graphics-card requirements should come from official support documentation, not low-authority launch coverage.
- Ignoring renewal terms: Check the current price, taxes, region and cancellation conditions before starting Master Tier.
Verdict
Sigil was a notable attempt to make online D&D feel like a shared 3D video game world. Its Unreal Engine presentation, animated effects and custom miniature tools offered something more immersive than a conventional 2D VTT, while its D&D Beyond connection reduced some ecosystem friction.
But the product’s current status changes the recommendation completely. Sigil is temporarily usable, development has ended, and its servers are scheduled to shut down at the end of October 2026. Try it if you want a short-lived look at an ambitious experiment. For a campaign meant to last, choose D&D Beyond Maps, Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds or Owlbear Rodeo according to your priorities for accessibility, automation, customisation and long-term control.
