The pre-launch headline that Geoff Keighley was the only person advertising it captured a perception of sparse follow-up promotion after the game’s high-profile reveal—but the available reporting does not prove that he was literally the only person or channel promoting it.
What was Highguard?
Highguard was Wildlight Entertainment’s debut free-to-play PvP raid shooter. Its pitch combined team-based combat with travel across a large map, gathering gear and resources, competing for a Shieldbreaker objective, and attacking or defending bases. It launched for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC. Wildlight announced the January 26 launch; IGN also reported on its release.
Was Geoff Keighley the only person who promoted Highguard?
That claim is not established as a literal fact. Keighley introduced Highguard as the closing world premiere at The Game Awards. In the period before launch, contemporary coverage described a quiet stretch after that reveal and limited public information about gameplay. That supports the headline’s impression of a conspicuous lack of follow-up, but it is not an exhaustive record of developer, platform, creator, or paid promotion. The pre-launch report documents that contemporary observation; The Game Awards identifies the event where the reveal appeared.
Why did Highguard shut down?
On March 3, 2026, Wildlight announced that Highguard would permanently shut down on March 12. The studio said it had not built a sustainable player base to support the game long term. It also reported that more than two million players had stepped into the game. That is Wildlight’s cumulative player figure, not a count of concurrent users or people who remained active. Gematsu reproduced the studio’s shutdown statement.

The story is therefore not that Keighley alone can be proven to have marketed Highguard. It is that a prominent reveal was followed, according to contemporaneous coverage, by an unusually quiet pre-launch period—and that the game later launched but did not build the sustainable player base its developer said it needed.
