Amazon did not announce that it was ending Prime Gaming when it cut about 180 jobs in its games division in November 2023. Instead, Amazon Games vice president Christoph Hartmann said the company would refine the Prime benefit to focus more on monthly free games. Amazon’s later descriptions show the benefit continuing, presented through Luna, with monthly PC games and a Twitch channel subscription still included for Prime members.
What Amazon said when it cut jobs in November 2023
On November 13, 2023, Thurrott reported that Amazon had laid off about 180 employees in its games division. The report said the company had eliminated around 100 games-unit jobs in April that year as well. It attributed Amazon’s strategy to an employee email from Christoph Hartmann, Amazon Games vice president, obtained by Reuters.

Hartmann wrote that Amazon was “refining our Prime benefit to increase our focus” on delivering free games each month, which he said customers wanted most. That statement described a shift in emphasis; it did not say that Prime Gaming was being shut down or specify that particular other perks had ended. The contemporaneous report said the future of those other benefits was unclear at the time. Thurrott’s November 2023 report is the source for the layoff figures and the quoted email; Amazon’s later materials do not independently verify those details.
At the time, the report described Prime Gaming as offering in-game content, downloadable games, a monthly Twitch channel subscription and, in the US, UK, Canada and Germany, a rotating selection of Luna cloud games. It also said members needed an active Prime membership to claim games, but could keep claimed games after cancelling. Those are details of the 2023 offering as reported then, not a guarantee that every offer or claim mechanic remains unchanged.

Did Amazon get rid of Prime Gaming?
No. Amazon’s October 23, 2025 Luna FAQ described Prime gaming benefits as being delivered through Luna. It said Prime members could access a rotating selection of downloadable PC games each month wherever Prime was available, and that the monthly Twitch subscription previously offered through Prime Gaming remained available.
The change is best understood as a shift in how Amazon presents and delivers gaming benefits, rather than confirmation that the benefits ended. Amazon’s gaming homepage describes a rotating selection of games included with Prime, while its UK help page lists free games and a monthly Twitch channel subscription where available. See Amazon Luna and Amazon UK’s Prime Gaming help page for Amazon’s current descriptions.

What Prime members can get, and where
| Benefit or access point | What Amazon’s sources say | Availability and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly downloadable PC games | Prime members can access a rotating selection of downloadable PC games each month. | Amazon’s October 2025 FAQ says this is available wherever Prime is available; the selection rotates. |
| Cloud-delivered games through Luna | The October 2025 FAQ lists Luna cloud gaming in 14 countries: the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Portugal, Belgium and Luxembourg. | This is the country list in Amazon’s October 2025 FAQ, not a claim of worldwide cloud-game availability. |
| Monthly Twitch channel subscription | Amazon says the monthly Twitch subscription previously offered through Prime Gaming remained available. | Amazon’s UK help page qualifies availability with “where available.” |
| Prime Video app on Fire TV | Amazon announced that Prime members could start games from a Games tab in the Prime Video app, using a controller or phone, without a download or separate purchase to start playing. | Amazon’s July 23, 2026 announcement covered Fire TVs in the US and UK only. |
The 2025 FAQ also described an included Luna library of more than 50 games and a GameNight collection of more than 25 local multiplayer games. Those were catalog counts in the October 2025 FAQ, not fixed guarantees: Amazon said the library would evolve and some games would periodically leave. The July 2026 Fire TV announcement named Hogwarts Legacy, EA Sports FC 26 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle among its games. Availability of particular games can vary by offering and date.
How the July 2026 Fire TV announcement fits
On July 23, 2026, Amazon announced Luna access inside the Prime Video app on Fire TVs in the US and UK. Prime members in those supported locations can open the Games tab and start a game using a compatible controller or a phone, without downloading a game or making a separate purchase to begin playing. The announcement is specific to the named countries and Fire TVs; it does not establish the same integration on every device or in every Luna country. Amazon’s announcement provides the details.

No dedicated Luna Controller is required for every way of playing. Amazon says supported Bluetooth controllers can be paired, and GameNight games can use phone touch controls. The Luna Controller is an optional accessory, not a prerequisite for receiving Prime gaming benefits.
