Amazon is cutting back a significant amount of its first-party AAA game development, especially work on MMOs, while putting more emphasis on casual and social games for Luna. That does not mean every MMO has closed: New World has a scheduled shutdown date, while Throne and Liberty is due to move to a new western operator.
What Amazon actually announced
In October 2025, Amazon said it would halt “a significant amount” of its first-party AAA game development, specifically work around MMOs, and make substantial role reductions at its Irvine and San Diego studios and central publishing team. The statement, from Amazon VP Steve Boom in a memo shared with The Verge, described a retrenchment in part of Amazon’s game-making and publishing business—not an immediate shutdown of every MMO the company supported.

The same memo pointed to a different emphasis: the revamped Luna, including social party games, and Studio 5’s focus on casual and AI-focused games optimized for Luna. It also mentioned work then underway on March of Giants, a Tomb Raider game with Crystal Dynamics, and an open-world driving game with Maverick Games. Those were project updates reported in October 2025, not confirmation of their release plans today.
What happens to Amazon’s MMO games?
Amazon’s games show why “ditching MMOs” is too broad as a description of the change. A game can stop receiving new content, remain playable for a time, or continue under a different publisher and operator. New World and Throne and Liberty now have different paths.

New World: no more content updates, with a shutdown scheduled
Amazon said on October 28, 2025, that Season 10: Nighthaven would be New World’s final content release and that it intended to keep the servers running through 2026. The current Steam listing for New World: Aeternum gives a later, specific plan: the game is scheduled to go offline on all platforms on January 31, 2027. The listing also says it was to be delisted on January 15, 2026, a date that has already passed as of October 2026.
That makes the distinction important for players: the content cutoff was not the same as the end of play. For the latest access and account information, check Amazon’s New World update and FAQ alongside the current store notice.

Throne and Liberty: western operations are planned to transfer
Amazon said in 2025 that it would continue supporting the externally developed Throne and Liberty. Its later transition announcement says western live operations and publishing responsibilities are scheduled to move to FirstSpark Games / NC in Q4 2026. This is a planned operator transition, not an announced closure.

The transition FAQ says player accounts, characters, progression, inventory, platforms, and game data are preserved by default, subject to an opt-out process. Players will need to accept NC’s terms after the transition. Because Q4 2026 is an active transition window, players should use the official notice for the latest timing and instructions.

Amazon’s 2025 memo also described continued support for Lost Ark at that time. The sources available here do not establish a current publisher change or later status for Lost Ark, so its present arrangements should not be inferred from the New World or Throne and Liberty updates.
What Amazon is doing with Luna and GameNight
Amazon’s current games site describes GameNight as a collection of party and social games available through Luna. As of October 2026, Amazon says Prime members can access a Luna game library that includes new GameNight games at no additional cost; see the Amazon Games site for current service details. Amazon’s October 6, 2026 Luna update lists that month’s content and describes games for solo play or for playing with family and friends. One featured title, Space Metal Mania, is described as couch co-op and supports Luna Remote Play.

GameNight is designed for a living-room TV. Each player scans a QR code and uses a smartphone as a controller, according to Amazon’s GameNight overview. That changes the practical setup: people can join with their phones instead of needing a dedicated Luna controller. GameNight is one part of Luna’s offering, not a replacement for all controller-based Luna games.
Do you need a Luna Controller for GameNight?
No. Amazon’s GameNight setup uses smartphones as individual controllers, so you do not need to buy a Luna Controller just to join those party games. The Luna Controller documentation identifies the physical controller as model T28B69; it is an optional accessory for compatible Luna games, rather than a requirement for GameNight. Check Luna’s current regional availability and service terms before planning a session, since access and catalogs can change.

What the shift means for players
- For New World players: Season 10: Nighthaven was the last content release, and the current Steam listing schedules the game’s offline date for January 31, 2027.
- For Throne and Liberty players in the West: Amazon’s publishing and live-operations role is due to transfer to FirstSpark Games / NC in Q4 2026; follow the official transition instructions for account choices and terms.
- For Luna users: Amazon is actively promoting GameNight and social play, with the October 2026 update providing a dated snapshot of that month’s catalog rather than a guarantee of future availability.
- For anyone reading the headline literally: Amazon is reducing first-party MMO development, but that is distinct from immediately ending every MMO service it publishes or supports.
