The Rito Champion died during the Great Calamity, and Link later encounters his spirit after freeing the Divine Beast. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity tells a distinct pre-Calamity story in which Revali survives the Windblight Ganon encounter, according to Zelda reference sources.
What happened to Revali in Breath of the Wild?
Revali is the Rito Champion and the pilot of Divine Beast Vah Medoh. During the Great Calamity, he and the other Champions were killed before they could complete their mission to defend Hyrule. Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild Explorer’s Guide confirms Revali’s role and says the Champions died without fulfilling their ultimate destiny.
A century later, Link frees Vah Medoh from Windblight Ganon. Revali appears as a spirit in this story and grants Link Revali’s Gale, an ability that lets Link rise into the air on a powerful updraft. The details of this encounter and ability transfer are described in secondary Zelda reference pages, rather than the cited Nintendo guide.
Why does Revali survive in Age of Calamity?
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity presents a different perspective on familiar characters before the Great Calamity; Nintendo also highlights added story sequences about the Champions. It is a separate telling, not a revision to the events that explain Revali’s fate in Breath of the Wild.

Secondary Zelda references report that Revali survives the Windblight Ganon encounter in Age of Calamity. That outcome belongs to this game’s version of the story. It does not mean Revali survived the Great Calamity in the backstory of Breath of the Wild.
| Game | Revali’s story | What his role means |
|---|---|---|
| Breath of the Wild | He dies during the Great Calamity; Link later encounters his spirit after freeing Vah Medoh. | He is one of the fallen Champions whose legacy helps Link fight Calamity Ganon. |
| Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity | It is a distinct pre-Calamity telling; secondary references report that he survives the Windblight encounter. | He appears as part of the Champions’ story before the events that leave him dead in Breath of the Wild. |
What Revali’s fate says about his character
Revali is portrayed as a skilled, proud, and competitive Champion. Those qualities come through in his scenes and dialogue; they are character interpretation, not a separate official diagnosis. His death also gives the Vah Medoh sequence a bittersweet shape: Link receives help from a Champion whose original mission ended in failure.
