Spoilers: This article discusses the mystery of the missing humans and the story’s explanation for their absence.
Pokémon Pokopia begins in a town where humans and Pokémon once lived, but the greenery has withered and the residents are gone. The game’s premise establishes that disappearance; gameplay reporting describes records that point to humans leaving an increasingly uninhabitable Earth. That is an evacuation explanation—not proof that humanity is extinct, or that every person escaped.
What does Pokopia say happened to the humans?
The official premise sets up an abandoned town, not a detailed account of humanity’s fate. The Pokémon Company’s announcement says that “the residents have completely vanished” from a place where humans and Pokémon once lived. It does not say that humans died out, why they vanished, or where they went. The Pokémon Company’s November 13, 2025 announcement introduces the mystery rather than resolving it.
Gameplay coverage supplies a reported explanation: human documents found during exploration point to people leaving Earth as conditions became increasingly impossible to endure. Cadena SER’s March 12, 2026 report describes environmental collapse and a departure into space. Treat that as secondary reporting about the game’s records, not wording from the official premise.

How does the game reveal the past?
Pokopia lets players infer what happened by exploring the remains of human life rather than opening with a complete explanation. Heather Wald’s GamesRadar gameplay feature describes journals, reports, newspaper clippings, ruins, and relics as clues. The records make the missing humans part of an unfolding mystery: their abandoned world is evidence to investigate, not just scenery.
The contrast is personal as well as environmental. After a long slumber, Ditto wakes and takes human form before meeting Tangrowth, who has been living alone. Wald quotes Tangrowth saying, “I’d resigned myself to be alone in this world forever.” That character line conveys the loneliness of the setting; it is not a developer’s explanation of the catastrophe.

Is humanity extinct in Pokémon Pokopia?
Not on the evidence established by the official premise. “Vanished” describes what happened to the town’s residents from the perspective of the story’s opening. The reported records-based evacuation explanation suggests that humans left Earth, but it does not establish their exact destination, whether everyone escaped, or whether they will return. The safest answer is that humans are absent from the town and the game’s records reportedly point to an evacuation—not that the species is confirmed extinct.
Who is left in the abandoned town?
Ditto and Tangrowth anchor the opening. Ditto has awoken after a long sleep and can transform into a human; Tangrowth has been living alone in the town. Nintendo’s official description frames the next step as restoring the landscape and learning skills from Pokémon to create habitats. The rebuilding gives Ditto a way to make a livable place again while the player uncovers traces of the world that came before.
