Ryujinx was discontinued on October 1, 2024, after Nintendo contacted lead developer gdkchan. The official repositories and downloads disappeared soon afterward. Here is what is confirmed, what remains unknown, and why Ryubing should not be confused with an official return of Ryujinx.
Ryujinx was discontinued on October 1, 2024, after Nintendo contacted lead developer gdkchan. A Ryujinx team member said Nintendo offered an agreement under which development would stop and the organization and related assets under gdkchan’s control would be removed. The project’s official GitHub repositories, downloads, and other infrastructure then disappeared.

There is no publicly documented Ryujinx lawsuit, court judgment, or complete settlement agreement. The most accurate description is that Ryujinx shut down after Nintendo’s contact and apparent legal or commercial pressure—not that Nintendo sued Ryujinx and won in court.
What happened to Ryujinx?
On October 1, 2024, the original Ryujinx GitHub organization and its main repositories went offline. The official download page was emptied, and links that had pointed to files hosted on GitHub began returning 404 errors. The project’s source history, builds, and associated development pages were no longer available from the original locations.

The explanation circulated through Ryujinx’s Discord and social channels. According to a team member, Nintendo had contacted gdkchan on September 30 and offered an agreement to stop work on Ryujinx and remove the organization and related assets under his control. The organization was taken down while confirmation was pending, but the team member said the result was clear once the removal occurred.
Nintendo did not publicly publish a detailed Ryujinx complaint, judgment, or settlement in the material available for this account. The precise terms therefore remain unknown. There is no established public evidence that Nintendo bought the source code, paid contributors, obtained ownership of every fork, or imposed specific restrictions on individual developers.
The original project is discontinued—not merely inactive
The original Ryujinx GitHub organization now contains only a small .github repository. Its description says that “the original Ryujinx project has discontinued,” directs interested users toward Ryubing or ryujinx-mirror, and says the organization will remain empty so the original updater does not hijack old builds.
That distinction matters. A dormant open-source project might eventually resume development. Ryujinx’s remaining organization instead says that the original project will receive no updates. The continued existence of old builds, community discussions, or social-media accounts does not mean the original development team has returned.
At the time of the shutdown, Ryujinx’s X, YouTube, and Patreon accounts initially remained online, and its Discord server was still operating. Those community channels should not be confused with an active official codebase.

Why did Nintendo’s Yuzu case matter?
Ryujinx shut down several months after Nintendo obtained a much clearer legal result against Tropic Haze, the company associated with Yuzu.
Nintendo filed that lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island on February 26, 2024. The parties filed a joint motion for final judgment and permanent injunction on March 4, and the court entered the judgment on March 6.
The Yuzu judgment stated that Yuzu circumvented Nintendo Switch technological protections and enabled encrypted Switch games to run on non-Switch devices. It permanently barred the defendants from developing, distributing, marketing, or trafficking in Yuzu and related circumvention technology. The settlement also required a $2.4 million payment and the surrender or destruction of specified tools and assets.
That outcome increased pressure across the Switch-emulation ecosystem. It demonstrated that Nintendo was willing to pursue emulator-related conduct through litigation and seek broad remedies. But the Yuzu judgment did not legally decide Ryujinx’s status: Ryujinx was not named as a defendant, and the public account of Ryujinx’s closure describes Nintendo contact and an agreement rather than a filed Ryujinx lawsuit.
Was Ryujinx illegal?
The available evidence does not support the broad claim that all emulation is illegal. The Yuzu dispute involved allegations and findings concerning circumvention technology, cryptographic keys, unauthorized copies, and conduct that enabled access to copyrighted games. Those findings were specific to Yuzu and the Tropic Haze defendants.

Ryujinx was open-source software distributed under an MIT license, according to contemporaneous reporting. An open-source license did not prevent Nintendo from applying pressure to the project, but it also does not prove that every part of Ryujinx—or every use of it—was unlawful. The public record does not establish exactly which Ryujinx features, assets, or practices Nintendo objected to.

Game files, console firmware, encryption keys, and unauthorized copies can raise separate copyright and circumvention issues. The Yuzu judgment is one reason guides should not casually bundle an emulator with ROM, key, or firmware downloads. Laws vary by jurisdiction, so readers should consult applicable local law rather than treating general emulator commentary as legal advice.
What is Ryubing, and is it the new official Ryujinx?
Ryubing is a separate community-led fork, not an official relaunch of the original Ryujinx project. Because Ryujinx was open source, copies of its code and related work survived outside the original GitHub organization.
Ryubing’s verified GitHub organization describes itself as a fork of the discontinued Switch emulator Ryujinx. Its repositories include an issue tracker, compatibility database, update server, website, documentation, a local-network multiplayer server, and other supporting infrastructure. The organization showed repository activity during 2026, including work on its website, compatibility information, server, and documentation.
That activity means a separate community is continuing development based on the Ryujinx codebase. It does not mean the original Ryujinx developers officially returned, that Nintendo approved the fork, or that Ryujinx itself is still receiving official updates.

What should users make of “Ryujinx download” websites?
Search results using the Ryujinx name may lead to mirrors, archives, forks, or unofficial download pages. Their authenticity, security, legal status, and relationship to the original developers can vary substantially.
- Do not assume a page is official merely because it uses the Ryujinx name or logo.
- Be cautious with installers, repacked builds, “latest version” claims, password-protected archives, and downloads bundled with keys or firmware.
- Prefer project-controlled repositories and verify that a download belongs to the project you intend to use.
- Do not treat the original Ryujinx GitHub organization as an active support channel; it explicitly says the original project is discontinued.
- Keep emulator software separate from game files, firmware, encryption keys, and other copyrighted or circumvention-related materials.
The original organization specifically points readers toward Ryubing or ryujinx-mirror, rather than endorsing every third-party website that uses the Ryujinx name. Even those references should be checked carefully because a pointer to a repository is not the same as a guarantee about every file or service associated with it.
Why did Ryujinx disappear so completely?
The shutdown removed more than a download button. The official organization, source repositories, build distribution, and project pages were all taken offline or emptied in a short period. That made the event look like a sudden takedown, but the available account points to a negotiated or voluntary shutdown following Nintendo’s outreach.
Several factors explain the severity of the disruption:

- Control of official assets: removing the organization and related infrastructure eliminated the project’s authoritative update and distribution paths.
- Legal uncertainty: the Yuzu judgment had already shown the potential consequences of Nintendo’s anti-circumvention claims.
- Open-source continuity without official continuity: forks could preserve code, but they could not preserve the original project’s legal arrangement, maintainers, infrastructure, or official status automatically.
What the shutdown does—and does not—mean
| Claim | Accurate? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| “Nintendo sued Ryujinx and won.” | No | No public Ryujinx lawsuit or judgment was identified in the available record. |
| “Nintendo contacted Ryujinx’s lead developer and the project then shut down.” | Yes, with qualification | This is the team member’s public account of the September 30 contact and October 1 shutdown. |
| “Ryujinx is still officially supported.” | No | The original organization says the project is discontinued and will receive no updates. |
| “Ryubing is the official new Ryujinx.” | No | Ryubing describes itself as a separate fork and community organization. |
| “Nintendo owns the Ryujinx source code now.” | Unknown | The terms of any agreement have not been publicly disclosed. |
| “All Nintendo Switch emulation is illegal.” | Unsupported | The Yuzu judgment addressed specific defendants, technology, and conduct; it was not a blanket ruling on every emulator or use. |
The bottom line
Ryujinx ended on October 1, 2024, after Nintendo contacted its lead developer and the project’s official organization and infrastructure were removed. The exact terms of the resulting agreement are not public, and there is no established evidence of a Ryujinx court judgment.

The original Ryujinx project is discontinued. Ryubing and other mirrors or forks may preserve and continue parts of the codebase, but they are separate projects with their own maintainers, infrastructure, and legal considerations. Anyone investigating them should verify the source carefully and keep emulator software distinct from unauthorized games, keys, firmware, or other potentially infringing materials.
