Rubber-banding and delayed actions in multiplayer usually point to ping, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi, congestion, or a game server. Stutter in offline games points toward the console, game installation, storage, heat, or a software bug. A delayed or uneven picture may be caused by the TV, VRR, 120 Hz, or HDMI instead.
Use the symptom checklist below before changing advanced settings or buying accessories. The goal is to isolate the failing part first, then apply the least-destructive fix.

PS5 lag is not one problem. In an online match, “lag” usually means network delay, jitter, packet loss, server trouble, or an unstable Wi-Fi path. In an offline game, the same word may describe frame-time stutter caused by the game, storage, heat, or the console itself. A delayed picture can also come from the TV, VRR, 120 Hz, or HDMI connection rather than the internet.

What kind of PS5 lag are you experiencing?
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber-banding, teleporting players, delayed actions, speed-up movement, or disconnects in multiplayer | Ping, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, ISP routing, the game server, or PSN | Check service status, run the PS5 connection test, stop downloads, and test Ethernet |
| Hitches in offline and online games | Game installation, system software, cache/database problems, storage, heat, or a game-specific bug | Update the game and PS5, clear the cache, check ventilation, and test the title from internal storage |
| Button or picture delay while the frame rate looks steady | TV processing, Game Mode, VRR, 120 Hz, HDMI, or display firmware | Check the TV’s low-latency mode and test VRR, 120 Hz, and the HDMI connection |
| Slow downloads or updates rather than slow in-game responses | Network throughput, server load, storage space, or a failed download | Check storage, pause and resume the download, test the connection, and check service status |
| The problem affects only one game | A game patch, corrupted installation, title-specific server issue, or M.2 storage behavior | Update the title, compare another game, check the publisher’s support page, and try internal storage |
Ping is the round-trip time for data to travel between your console and the game service. Jitter is variation in that delay, while packet loss means some game data fails to complete the trip. High download speed does not automatically mean a stable gaming connection, and there is no single ping number that guarantees a good experience in every game. The game’s data center, route, netcode, consistency, and server load all matter.
10 ways to fix PS5 lag
1. Confirm whether the issue is online, local, or display-related
Before changing DNS, buying hardware, or resetting the console, reproduce the problem in a controlled way:
- Play an offline section of the affected game.
- Try a different game, preferably one that uses a different online service.
- Compare the PS5 on another display if the problem looks like picture or input delay.
- Note whether the issue occurs constantly or only at busy times, during downloads, or in one online mode.
Delayed inputs, rubber-banding, and disconnected players point toward the network path. Repeated hitches in menus and offline games point toward the console, game, storage, or heat. A smooth game simulation with a sluggish picture points toward the TV or HDMI path. This simple separation prevents an internet fix from being applied to a rendering or display problem.
2. Check PSN and the individual game’s service status
Open the official PlayStation Network status page when the problem occurs. A PSN outage or maintenance window cannot be repaired through your PS5 settings. If the issue affects only one title or one online mode, also check that publisher’s official server-status or support page; a game can have a separate outage even when PSN is operating normally.
Do not treat a status page as a permanent health report. It is live information, so check it at the time of the failure. If other players are reporting the same issue and the service page or publisher acknowledges an incident, wait for the service to recover instead of repeatedly changing local settings.

Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
3. Run the connection test and try Ethernet
On the PS5, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Restart the console after recording the result, then test the same game again. The test is useful for identifying a basic connection failure, but it does not prove that the route to a particular game server is consistent or that the game’s servers are healthy.
For a wired test, connect the PS5 directly to the router and use Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect. Ethernet is both a possible fix and a diagnostic. If multiplayer becomes stable immediately over a cable, the wireless path, signal environment, or Wi-Fi congestion is implicated. It does not prove that your ISP or the game server is trouble-free, and it cannot fix offline frame-time stutter.
The PS5 supports Ethernet connections up to 1000BASE-T. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable for PS5 is a practical way to perform this test or create a permanent wired connection. Cat 6 itself should not be advertised as a magic latency reducer: a properly functioning compatible Ethernet cable is valuable because it removes the local wireless link from the diagnosis.
4. Improve the Wi-Fi path before changing advanced settings
If Ethernet is not practical, move the console closer to the router and reduce obstructions between them. Avoid placing the router inside a cabinet or behind large objects, and keep the PS5 away from sources of wireless interference where possible. Restart the modem and router, then leave the network equipment powered off for at least five minutes before turning it back on. Check the router manufacturer’s instructions for firmware updates as well.
A new router or mesh system is worth considering only when the evidence points to coverage, interference, or household congestion. A Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E mesh system may improve coverage in a large or difficult home, but it cannot repair an ISP routing problem, a game-server outage, or stutter that also occurs offline. Measure the result in the room where the PS5 is used, and check compatibility with your ISP and existing equipment rather than buying based on advertised speed alone.
Under the PS5’s network setup, Advanced Settings can expose IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, proxy, and—on PS5 Pro where available—Multi-Link Operation options. Sony cautions users who are unfamiliar with these settings to consult their ISP or network administrator. Change one setting at a time, record the original value, and revert it if the connection becomes less stable.

5. Stop competing downloads, streaming, and synchronization
Pause game downloads, system updates, cloud synchronization, video streaming, and other large transfers while testing a multiplayer match. Background traffic can consume bandwidth and create queueing delay, especially on a busy home network. Close unnecessary applications and retry after the network is quiet.

- Weatherproof & UV Resistant: Outdoor-rated Cat8 Ethernet cable with UV-resistant PVC jacket; withstands direct sunlight, extreme cold, humidity, and hot weather; anti-aging and durable; Includes 18-month support.
A clean restart sequence is often useful: pause transfers, fully restart the PS5, power off the modem and router, wait at least five minutes, power the network equipment back on, and then retest. This is not a guaranteed ping reduction, but it removes temporary congestion and stale-connection conditions.
6. Update the PS5 and the affected game
Install the latest PS5 system software through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. To check a game, highlight it on the Home screen, press the Options button, and select Check for Update.
Updates can correct application, compatibility, system, or network-related problems, but an update is not a promise of better frame rate or lower ping. If an update fails or becomes stuck, retry the download after checking storage space and service status. Do not download system files from unofficial sites.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. Clear the PS5 system software cache
Clearing the cache is a relatively low-risk Safe Mode step for system-feature problems or performance drops. To enter Safe Mode:
- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache.
Read the on-screen warnings before selecting any Safe Mode option. Clearing the cache is not a routine “boost” that every PS5 needs, and it will not lower ping caused by a game server or ISP. It is most appropriate when the console itself has developed persistent sluggish behavior or system-feature problems.

8. Rebuild the database or repair console storage
From Safe Mode, Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. It can help with local system behavior such as a lingering deleted-game icon or persistent menu and application issues. It is not the first response to a single bad online match.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Console Storage is another Safe Mode option. Sony documents it for startup and storage problems and states that it does not erase data. Use it when the console reports storage trouble, fails to start normally, or shows other signs of a local drive problem.
Keep these Safe Mode choices distinct:
- Restore Default Settings resets settings without deleting games or saved data.
- Reset PS5 deletes user data.
- Reinstall System Software is a destructive last resort that deletes user data and removes the PS5 system software.
Back up important saves and captures before using any option that may affect data. Do not jump directly to a full reset for network lag.
9. Test the TV, VRR, 120 Hz, and HDMI path
If the game appears to run smoothly but controls or the image feel delayed, flicker, go black, or appear uneven, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check the display’s Game Mode or low-latency mode, then test the relevant options one at a time:
- Turn off VRR if an unsupported game behaves unexpectedly.
- Turn off 120 Hz output when a 120 Hz game or display causes video-output problems.
- Check resolution, video transfer rate, and the PS5’s 1440p test where relevant.
- Update the TV firmware.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV rather than through an AVR, switch, capture device, or other intermediary while diagnosing.
- Use a suitable HDMI 2.1 port when 4K/120 Hz requires one.
For 4K/120 Hz problems, use the cable included with the PS5 or an appropriately rated Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable for PS5. This is a display-path accessory, not a cure for online lag. Replacing an HDMI cable cannot reduce ping, packet loss, or rubber-banding.

10. Check ventilation, storage, and the affected game’s installation
Keep the PS5 in an open, ventilated position with at least 10 cm of free space around each side. Avoid cramped cabinets, carpet or long-fiber rugs, and locations where dust can accumulate around the vents. A fan becoming louder during demanding games can be normal by itself; fan noise alone does not prove overheating.

To clean the vents, disconnect the PS5 from AC power and use a low-powered vacuum to remove dust from and around the air vents. A low-powered electronics vacuum can be used for this external cleaning, but no particular model should be treated as Sony-approved. Do not imply that a cooling stand is required, and do not open the console merely because a game feels laggy.
Check Settings > Storage if downloads fail, the console reports insufficient space, or the problem began after installing or changing storage. If the affected game is installed on an M.2 SSD, move it to the PS5’s internal storage and test again. Sony specifically recommends this comparison when an M.2-installed game has problems.
An expansion drive is primarily a capacity and storage-location solution, not a guaranteed frame-rate or online-latency upgrade. If you need one, choose a PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with heatsink only after checking Sony’s current requirements for interface, capacity, physical dimensions, sequential read speed, and heat dissipation. Confirm that the heatsink fits the PS5’s clearance. Sony also cautions that a game installed on M.2 storage does not necessarily perform exactly like the same game on the internal SSD.
Settings and products not to change blindly
- DNS: A different DNS service may affect name lookup, but it is not a universal fix for in-match ping, jitter, or packet loss.
- MTU: Use a non-default value only for a specific, measured reason and keep the original value available for rollback.
- Port forwarding: Do not apply a universal port list or expose services without understanding the router and game requirements.
- VPNs and “lag boosters”: An extra route can improve or worsen latency. Test rather than assuming a gaming VPN helps.
- Cooling stands: Sony’s documented approach is open placement, clearance, and dust removal—not a requirement to buy an accessory.
- SSD upgrades: More storage does not automatically produce higher FPS or lower online latency.
- PC repair utilities: Windows software cannot repair PS5 system software, console storage, or PlayStation networking.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Escalate when the issue persists after the relevant branch has been tested—not necessarily after performing every fix. Before contacting support, record:
- Whether the issue affects online play, offline play, one game, or every game.
- The date and time, game mode, display, connection type, and whether Ethernet changed the result.
- Any error codes and the exact steps that reproduce the problem.
- Storage changes, unusual shutdowns, overheating warnings, or recent system updates.
Check Settings > System > System Software > Error History for recorded problems. Use PlayStation’s official Repairs or Support route if the console has repeated storage errors, fails to start properly, shows persistent system-wide stutter, overheats, or remains faulty after the appropriate software and connection checks. Back up data before repair or destructive recovery steps, and do not reinstall system software casually.
A quick decision path
- Only multiplayer? Check PSN and the game server, stop background traffic, test Ethernet, and investigate Wi-Fi or ISP conditions.
- Offline and online? Update the system and game, clear the cache, rebuild the database, check storage, and inspect ventilation.
- Only one game? Update it, compare another title, check its support page, and move it from M.2 storage to internal storage if applicable.
- Only one TV or a 4K/120 Hz setup? Test Game Mode, VRR, 120 Hz, firmware, direct HDMI, and the cable.
- Still broken everywhere? Review Error History, back up your data, and contact PlayStation Support rather than repeatedly resetting the console.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will faster internet fix PS5 lag?
Usually not. Download speed is only one part of the connection. Ping, jitter, packet loss, the route to the game server, and server load can cause delayed inputs or rubber-banding even when downloads are fast.
Should I change my PS5 DNS or MTU settings?
Not as a universal fix. DNS and MTU are advanced PS5 network settings. Change them only for a specific troubleshooting reason, keep the original values, and consult your ISP or network administrator if you are unfamiliar with them.
Can an SSD fix PS5 lag?
An M.2 SSD can add compatible storage, but it does not automatically improve FPS or online latency. If a particular game behaves badly from M.2 storage, move it to the internal PS5 SSD and test again.
When should I reset my PS5?
Only after less destructive troubleshooting and a backup. Restore Default Settings is different from Reset PS5: the latter deletes user data, while system-software reinstallation is also destructive. Review Error History and contact PlayStation Support before taking those steps.
The Bottom Line
Find the branch before applying the fix: Ethernet and network checks address online instability; Safe Mode, storage, and ventilation address local stutter; and VRR, 120 Hz, Game Mode, and HDMI address display delay. No DNS value, SSD, cable, VPN, or cooling accessory is a universal PS5-lag cure.
