Sarah Bond left Microsoft in February 2026, during the same leadership transition in which Phil Spencer announced his retirement and Microsoft appointed Asha Sharma to lead Microsoft Gaming. Microsoft said Bond had decided to leave “to begin a new chapter,” but did not explain her personal reasons. The timing alone does not establish that she was forced out or passed over.
What Microsoft confirmed about Sarah Bond’s departure
On February 20, 2026, Microsoft announced that Asha Sharma would become executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft Gaming. In his statement, then-Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said he had discussed stepping back with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella the previous fall and would retire. Spencer also said Bond had decided to leave Microsoft. Microsoft’s February 20 announcement did not say Bond was fired or give her personal reasons for leaving.
That distinction matters: the announcement confirms that Bond’s departure coincided with the leadership change, but it does not establish why she left. It offers no evidence that she departed because she was passed over for Spencer’s job or because of a dispute.
How the Xbox leadership changed
Microsoft appointed Sharma to lead Microsoft Gaming in February. Spencer said he would remain in an advisory role through the summer to support the handoff. Microsoft’s April 23, 2026 editorial note says the organization is known as XBOX and Sharma’s title is CEO XBOX. The current Xbox leadership page lists Sharma as CEO, not Bond.

The roster is a snapshot, not a complete account of Bond’s career after Microsoft. In an October 8, 2026 announcement, Sharma named Kayleen Walters President of XP and Maria Angelidou-Smith CEO of Mojang and Minecraft, both reporting to her. That announcement did not report a return by Bond or a new Xbox role for her; it also does not establish whether she holds a position elsewhere.
What Microsoft credited Bond with
Spencer described Bond as instrumental during a defining period for Xbox. He credited her with shaping platform strategy, expanding Game Pass and cloud gaming, supporting new hardware launches, and guiding some of the company’s significant moments. These are Microsoft’s characterizations of her contributions, rather than an independent assessment.

The broader context of Spencer’s retirement
In the same leadership announcement, Nadella said Xbox had reached over 500 million monthly active users and Microsoft Gaming spanned nearly 40 studios. Both figures were company-reported in the context of the February 2026 announcement; the cited source does not present them as independently audited measurements. The scale helps explain why Microsoft framed the change as a major leadership handoff, but it does not explain Bond’s private decision to leave.
