Those outcomes are possible, not inevitable: Sony does not publish a likelihood or say that a single incident will definitely cause harm. To unplug safely, choose Control Center > Power > Turn Off PS5 and wait until the indicator goes out.
What can happen if you unplug a PS5 while it is on?
The console may lose or corrupt data, or it may be damaged. Sony states this as a warning about what might happen when the AC cord is disconnected while the power indicator is on or blinking; it does not say these effects occur every time. Sony also does not specify which data might be affected or give a risk percentage. PlayStation Support’s power-saving guidance and the PS5 CFI-71XX Quick Start Guide both advise disconnecting the cord only when the indicator is off.
Check the power indicator before unplugging
The indicator tells you whether the console is fully off. Sony describes these states:

| Blinking | Starting, shutting down, or entering Rest Mode | Wait for the transition to finish; do not unplug while it blinks. |
| Solid orange | Rest Mode | Do not unplug yet. Rest Mode is still a powered, low-power state. |
| No light | Off | This is the state Sony specifies for disconnecting the AC cord. |
The indicator meanings are described in Sony’s power-indicator guide. During a normal shutdown, the light blinks white and then turns off.

How to turn off the PS5 before disconnecting power
- Open the Control Center by pressing the PS button on the controller.
- Select Power, then Turn Off PS5.
- Wait until the power indicator is completely off.
- Disconnect the AC power cord.
Sony also documents holding the console’s power button until it beeps as a way to shut it down. In either case, wait for the indicator to go out before removing the cord. The menu labels and guidance here follow Sony’s support instructions and the CFI-71XX Quick Start Guide.
Why Rest Mode is not the same as being off
Rest Mode uses less power, but the console remains powered. Depending on your settings, it may charge a controller over USB, download system software updates, or keep a game or app suspended. Its indicator is orange, so wait until the light is off if you need to unplug the console. Sony describes Rest Mode and related power-saving settings in its power-saving guidance.

If you already unplugged the console
An unplugging incident alone does not establish that the PS5 has been damaged. Sony’s warning describes possible consequences, not a diagnosis of an individual console. Reconnect power and check whether the console starts and operates normally. If it will not start or displays an error, use Sony’s power-indicator troubleshooting guidance or contact PlayStation Support rather than assuming a particular component has failed.

Sony gives a separate procedure for a console that is frozen and has an abnormal indicator—for example, one that only blinks white or stays blue instead of turning solid white. For that specific condition, Sony’s indicator troubleshooting steps include unplugging the console, waiting three minutes, reconnecting it, and turning it on. This is not the normal shutdown method for a PS5 that is working properly; follow the troubleshooting guidance for the symptoms you actually see.
